Man Charged with Murder After Beating Son to Death and Burning Him with Hot Water

Six months after his son tragically died due to severe burns and other injuries, Murtadah Mohammad of New Hampshire has been charged with his murder. Police said that Mohammad showed extreme indifference to the value of his son’s life by subjecting him to abusive violence and not getting him timely medical assistance.

The victim, 7-year-old Jaevion Riley, was the son of Mohammad. Mohammad was already arrested for multiple charges, including first-degree assault. The New Hampshire Department of Justice stated that these charges will be dropped and the prosecution will move to the Attorney General’s Office to pursue the murder charge and any associated charges.

On January 17, police responded to a home on Eastern Avenue after receiving a report of a 7-year-old suffering from severe burns to his face and body. They also noted that the boy was not conscious or breathing. Mohammad allegedly told first responders that he was in the shower and didn’t see how his son got hurt. However, authorities said that there were no signs of someone recently taking a shower. The defendant then informed police that he used force and hot water to discipline the child, according to the affidavit. He was arrested on January 19.

Rainah Riley, mother of Jaevion, described the horrific scene when she arrived to the hospital where he was being treated after being severely abused. She stated that it looked as if he had been burned by boiling water or oil, or set on fire, and that he had also suffered blunt force trauma to the head and his tooth had been kicked out.

Riley had reported signs of abuse, including bruising, to the New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth and Families, but she was met with no response. She voiced her frustration, asking “when is enough enough?”

A DCYF spokesperson cited the need to protect children and family confidentiality in response. Jaevion never recovered from the assault, and passed away on January 24th. An investigation, including an autopsy, was ongoing at the time to determine the cause and manner of death.

Ben-Gvir: ‘Brave citizen’ who shot Tel Aviv terrorist proves that more Israelis should carry guns

“There were so many miracles here. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I wouldn’t have been there.”

By World Israel News Staff

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Tuesday said that a terror attack in Tel Aviv underscored his stance for broader gun ownership among Israelis after a civilian fatally shot the terrorist who had injured seven people in a violent stabbing and vehicular ramming spree.

Speaking to the civilian who shot the terrorist, Ben-Gvir said: “I wish to commend you; your actions in saving lives mark you as a true hero. It’s crucial to recognize the importance of armed citizens in safeguarding others. I value you, and I appreciate every citizen who steps in to rescue others.

“I’m going to give you public backing, so there won’t be any misunderstanding here, I’m going to tell everyone that no one was confused on the issue. You are being strengthened,” the minister added.

The civilian responded: “There were so many miracles here. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I wouldn’t have been there.”

“I saw him take out a huge knife and stab a person next to his (car) door and I thought at first it was a case of road rage, but then I saw him run towards someone else and I knew it was a terrorist,” he went on.

“I prayed to God that the bullet would fire because I knew that if not I was a dead man.”

Later on Twitter, he wrote: “I call on the public who meet the criteria: carry guns.”

Ben-Gvir has called for modifying Israel’s strict gun licensing laws and to expand the list of those eligible to receive a firearm to include any veteran of combat service.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised the citizen for neutralizing the terrorist.

“Today a criminal attack took place in Tel Aviv that was stopped due to the intervention of an armed citizen. Without this intervention, it is possible that this attack would have claimed many lives,” he said.

“Whoever thinks that such an attack will deter us from continuing our fight against terrorism is wrong. He simply does not know the spirit of the State of Israel, does not know our government, our citizens and our soldiers,” he added.

‘Dictator’: Opposition hurl insults as reasonableness bill passes committee vote

The bill is set to proceed to the Knesset plenum for its first reading, likely to occur next week.

By World Israel News Staff

Opposition leaders on Tuesday condemned the decision by the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee to approve the contentious “reasonableness standard bill,” accusing committee head MK Simcha Rothman of being a “dictator.”

During a heated committee session in which a shouting match took place, MK Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) and and MK Benny Gantz (National Unity) alleged that Rothman unlawfully hastened the legislative process to align with the end of the Knesset’s summer session, saying that the bill was a precursor to corruption, crafted to protect politicians rather than citizens.

The controversial Reasonableness Standard bill seeks to curtail the Supreme Court’s power to veto decisions made by the government or individual ministers on the grounds of being “excessive in terms of reasonableness,” with proponents of the bill arguing that it curbs the Supreme Court’s nebulous authority to determine “reasonableness.”

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich told the committee after the vote that the bill “strengthens democracy.”

The protests aren’t “a fight for democracy,” he said, but rather a “privileged group that is fighting to protect its privilege.”

“The left is allowed to block roads and the right is prohibited,” he said, and drew a comparison with the protests against the 2005 Disengagement from Gaza, during which thousands were arrested for blocking roads in protest over the removal of Israelis from their homes in what would later become a terrorist-run enclave.

Following approval in the committee, the bill is set to proceed to the Knesset plenum for its first reading, likely to occur next week.

WATCH: Terror groups use Jenin mosque as cover, dig tunnels underneath

Palestinian terrorists in Jenin have turned a mosque into a terror HQ, replete with a weapons depot and an underground tunnel.

The IDF carried out a drone strike against terrorists outside the al-Ansari mosque before breaking in and taking over.

The tunnel was part of a network of terror tunnels connecting other buildings, including residential buildings and a kindergarten.

Yesterday, we operated to extract armed gunmen, who were using a Mosque as a cover for terrorist operations.

Today, soldiers completed the mission by confiscating the hundreds of different weapons and ammunition, and eliminating the underground pits and shafts used by the… pic.twitter.com/e4EqylgavF

The French Riots Are a Result of Miserable Conditions in French Society

Riots like the ones France is seeing after the police killing of a teenager don’t happen as a result of petty criminality. They only happen as a result of widespread anger at murderous policing, racial inequality, and social deprivation.

As we write, stories of the riots in France are broadcasting across the world, with talk of businesses being looted and everything from town halls to libraries going up in smoke at the hands of rioters.

These riots are popular revolts — revolts against police brutality, against the feeling of being treated as second-rate citizens, against the cost-of-living crisis in France. Their origin began on June 27, when seventeen-year-old Nahel M was executed by a police officer while trying to escape a roadside police check in one of Nanterre’s working-class neighborhoods.

This murder was not an isolated one; police killings have been soaring since former president François Hollande passed a 2017 bill allowing police officers to use firearms in case of civilian non-compliance. Since then, the number of victims of police brutality has grown year after year.

But if anger was sparked by this particular killing, it has been fueled by years of police abuse. A 2017 study in France showed that if you were perceived as an Arab or black male, you were twenty times more likely to be subject to a police check than the rest of the population. And the working-class neighborhoods where these revolts are taking place are severely under-resourced in terms of public services, with unemployment rates at 16-20 percent against a national average of 7-8 percent.

As of today, 2,300 arrests have been made, and their profiles show some similarities: many of them are teenagers. Very few have criminal records and they tend to be between the ages of fourteen and eighteen. On certain evenings, the average age of the arrested rioters is just seventeen.

But so far, political leaders from across the spectrum have refused to grasp the weight of the problem, resorting to false accusations. Portions of the government and the right-wing party Les Républicains, for instance, accuse left-wing La France Insoumise of sowing chaos in the country for seeking political solutions to the riots and refusing to join the blanket condemnation. Every time social conflict intensifies, this same reproach is always apportioned to the Left from the right wing and the Macronists.

At the highest level, Emmanuel Macron’s response has been unsurprisingly authoritarian and brutal. More than 45,000 police have been mobilized throughout the country to deal with the revolts. In a speech with interior minister Gérald Darmanin and prime minister Elisabeth Borne, Macron pledged that these revolts should be swiftly dealt with and that social media and video games were partially to blame for the conduct of teenagers rioters. Macron also called for parents to take responsibility and look after their children in the evenings. Justice minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said parents should “hold their kids” and threatened them with judiciary charges if they did not.

Last Friday, the UN called for France to “seriously tackle the profound problems of racism among law enforcement.” France answered that “any accusation of systemic racism or discrimination by law enforcement in France” was “totally unfounded.” No political announcement or political solution to end these revolts has been proposed by the government.

The far right has called for a state of emergency to be declared, with some far-right politicians labelling the moment as a “civilizational war,” arguing that the revolts were led by descendants of immigrants. They called for the government to let people put order back in the streets if the government would not; while Macron attacks the radical left, fascist militias armed with baseball bats have been spotted in the cities of Angers and Lorien, where they have been helping police make arrests, and in Lyon, where fifty fascists marched through the streets chanting “we’re at home.” The police and fascists are singing from similar hymn sheets; in recent days, two police unions have issued statements explaining that police forces were “at war’ with “pests” and “savages.”

What is frightening is that almost no political force is treating this revolt politically. The only answer the political class seems to give is a repressive one. The lone political party attempting to tackle the situation politically is La France Insoumise, whose parliamentary group has proposed solutions to end the crises generating these revolts. The first demand is to repeal the 2017 “permit to kill” bill, which allowed police officers to kill the young Nahel, as well as calling for a “truth and justice” commission on serious police violence and a mass investment plan for working-class neighborhoods.

Here, the radical left is proposing an “emergency plan to overcome the crisis.” This plan involves placing the revolt within the political realm: the revolts are not the result of failing parents, social networks, or Snapchat, but rather a total political crisis. The causes of the crisis are longstanding and need to be seriously addressed.

In this regard, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has said on the LCI television channel that “the question for a politician is not to call for calm or strike poses. It is to build calm. And for that, it is necessary to rationally and concretely solve the problems at hand.” During the previous presidential elections, the movement already called for the restructuring of the IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police), the dissolution of the BAC (Anti-Crime Brigade), and the establishment of a republican police force free from racism. They also advocated for adopting a significant code of ethics, implementing new measures to combat racial profiling and an improved police training program. This would involve extending the duration of police training and modifying its content, such as by introducing sociology courses.

This crisis reflects the erosion of the situation in France. With no action being taken against the dynamics of racial oppression and segregation that are poisoning French society, the execution of young Nahel acted as an explosive trigger. There is an urgent need for political leaders to overhaul police institutions completely and to ensure that the “Republican promise” — of higher education, access to employment, and so on — no longer stops at the doors of disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Christian founder of Holocaust center converts to Judaism

“If I do one thing with my conversion, I’m going to remind Jews just how special it is to be Jewish and to have one another.”

By World Israel News Staff

Founder of the UK’s National Holocaust Museum, Stephen Smith, who was raised in a deeply Christian family, has converted to Judaism, calling it a “complete change of perspective.”

Smith, who, together with his brother and mother established the Holocaust Center – the only site of its kind in the country – told the UK’s Jewish News that he came to the realization that he had “16 million new friends with whom I can collaborate and defeat the scourge of anti-Semitism.”

“I have been alone for thirty years. Try that. Try facing anti-Semites and being rhetorically beaten up every single day and feeling that you have to fight the world alone.”

His role as a steadfast advocate for the Jewish community gained him international recognition and eventually led to his relocation to Los Angeles in 2009, where he assumed leadership of the USC (University of Southern California) Shoah Foundation. The foundation, founded by Steven Spielberg, is dedicated to recording and teaching from Holocaust and Genocide survivor testimonies. After serving for 12 years, Smith stepped down in 2021.

During a trip to Israel, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. He conveyed his decision to convert to Judaism to his Jewish wife, Heather Maio-Smith, who questioned him in disbelief, “What, now?”

Smith, who converted under the Conservative stream of Judaism, described his spiritual journey to the newspaper as both a mission and a calling.

Not long after his decision to convert, Smith was asked to write a book on Jewish ethics from a Christian theologian’s perspective. He shared that he told his wife, “I think I just wrote my first chapter as a Jewish theologian” just a few weeks after deciding to convert. His shift in perspective was fundamental, turning “they” into “we” and thus altering his understanding of Jewish ethics as part of his ethical universe.

Smith began reframing Jewish history as ‘our history’ and ‘our story.’ He highlights that his shift to Judaism involved no rituals, synagogues, classes, or traditional conversion rites, but rather a complete shift in perspective. This allowed him to view Jewish history and culture from within.

Smith further expressed feeling safer as a Jew in a world grappling with anti-Semitism, a sentiment that may confuse some in the Jewish community. His conversion brought him a sense of companionship in the fight against anti-Semitism, with “16 million new friends” to join him in this struggle.

“I feel very much a part of something. And I have never felt safer in my life being Jewish. And Jewish people need to know that. That they are safe because they have one another. If I do one thing with my conversion, I’m going to remind Jews just how special it is to be Jewish and to have one another,” he told The Jewish News.

“And the fact that we can defeat these good for nothing people, these anti-Semites who actually don’t even know how to collaborate and don’t have the benefit of community.

“Most of them are acting out of fear and ignorance. And we are not ignorant. We should not be fearful. We have nothing to fear. And I say that as a genocide scholar and a scholar of the Holocaust. We have nothing to fear because we have one another. And we have to use that to our advantage. That’s what’s changed for me.”
