Biden demands Israel respect the right to protest; Ben-Gvir hits back, praises police conduct

After the White House insinuates anti-judicial reform protests restricted by authorities, Ben-Gvir says mass demonstrations were expertly managed by the police.

Following a statement from the Biden administration demanding that Israel enable anti-judicial reform protests, Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said police had expertly managed the mass demonstrations throughout the country.

The White House issued a statement on Tuesday “urging authorities to protect and respect the right of peaceful assembly. It is clear there is significant debate and discussion in Israel on the proposed plan. Such debates are a healthy part of a vibrant democracy.”

While the statement was carefully worded, it insinuated that there was a possible threat to protests’ rights to demonstrate. The statement was widely perceived as a jab at Israel’s police force after some activists complained that cops took too heavy a hand in managing the protests.

The remarks came just days after Biden called the current right-wing coalition “the most extreme” Israeli government he has witnessed in his decades as a lawmaker.

Following large protests which saw traffic forced to a standstill multiple times throughout the day on many of Israel’s largest highways due to protesters illegally blocking roadways, at least 77 protesters were arrested for preventing motorists from driving, for disturbing the peace, and for physically assaulting police officers.

“I did not see police violence today, but the use of reasonable force against lawbreakers who attacked police officers, broke the law, blocked roads, and prevented emergency vehicles and ambulances from reaching hospitals,” said Ben-Gvir after the White House statement.

“I am satisfied with the conduct in a very large percentage of the protests, but there are places where improvement is needed.”

In a second statement regarding the protests and reasonability clause released on Tuesday, the White House appeared to take a clear side against the new legislation.

“As the administration has said, both U.S. and Israeli democracy are built on strong institutions, checks and balances, and an independent judiciary,” the statement read.

TRUMP: ‘Say one good word about Israel, you’re out of politics’

“Ten years ago, this would have been impossible,” the former president said.

By World Israel News Staff

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, in his speech Monday night for the 2023 Israel Heritage Foundation Gala at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, bemoaned the decline in support for Israel in recent decades.

“I can say Israel is under siege politically. It used to be when I was growing up in Queens, my father was a builder in Brooklyn, and my father was very supportive of the whole Jewish movement. And in Congress, you couldn’t say a bad thing about Israel, you couldn’t even talk about it,” he said.

“Today, it’s almost like there’s a revolution against Israel in Congress, especially in Congress. The Senate’s not like it used to be, but at least it’s still there, but Congress between AOC and all these other lunatics, they’re lunatics. They hate Israel, they hate it with a passion, I hope you know that, and because they have a good line of nonsense, they convinced a lot of people that Israel is a bad place, that you’re bad people and something has to be done.

“Ten years ago, this would have been impossible,” he said.

Trump, who received the Foundation’s Crown of Jerusalem award, touted his policies as the most pro-Israel American president in history, reminding the crowd of his termination of the Iran nuclear deal, opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem and recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, among other actions – to enthusiastic applause.

Critics slam UK Holocaust center’s ‘Curb your inner Hitler’ workshop

Campaign Against Antisemitism called it “breathtakingly insulting and historically ignorant” to portray the Holocaust as simply a good vs. bad scenario.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Critics are slamming a UK Holocaust center’s workshop on fostering inclusion in the workplace entitled “Curb Your Inner Hitler” that studies dictators’ leadership styles in order to reject them, The Jewish Chronicle (JC) reported Tuesday.

In its press release touting the workshop, Holocaust Centre North (HCN) Head of Learning Hannah Randall is quoted as saying, “It gets people thinking. We are using extreme scenarios but it serves a dual purpose. It makes people question their leadership style and it makes them confront relatable experiences that some would rather forget.

“So, for example, most people have seen discrimination in their organization, which is stage three on the ten stages of genocide.”

Centre Director Alessandro Bucci noted at the workshop that “by exploring the gray areas of the Holocaust – and recognizing that it’s too simple to reduce it to just good and bad guys – we are having real success in getting people to think about how they can create more inclusive workplaces,” according to the JC.

With “allegations of bullying” rising to “a record high,” he said, there is “a clear need for a more forceful approach to make people think about what they can do differently.”

Labour Against Antisemitism, a voluntary organization started by Labour party members to combat Jew hatred in their midst, discovered the short program and was horrified.

“To hold Adolf Hitler — a megalomaniacal genocidal antisemite — up as simply a bad leadership model is offensive, lacking in awareness and an insult to the memories of six million Jewish people who were slaughtered according to his plans,” its spokesperson told the JC.

The group said it was “crass use of the Holocaust” to “drum up business” for the center, and that HCN “has a responsibility to accurately convey the nature of the Holocaust instead of legitimizing its trivialization.”

Campaign Against Antisemitism called it “breathtakingly insulting and historically ignorant” for Bucci to portray the Holocaust as simply a good vs. bad scenario.

“That a ‘Holocaust Centre,’ of all places, thinks it is appropriate to use the Shoah as a metric for conduct in the workplace is astounding,” the group added, calling for “an urgent rethink.”

HCN said it piloted the four-hour course for a year at selected businesses and city councils, with “overwhelmingly positive feedback from people who have attended…

“They said they valued the opportunity to learn about the Holocaust alongside considering how they could make their organizations more inclusive, accountable and transparent.”

Among other messages conveyed at the presentation, “The Holocaust didn’t begin with genocide. It began with discrimination, prejudice and intolerance,” and that there is danger in being “a bystander.”

After discussing how Stalin, for example, was “an extreme micromanager” and Hitler had “a hands-off and unaccountable approach that relies on his force of personality to get things done,” the presentation continues to focus on how “everyone is accountable and responsible for ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion” in the workplace.

‘I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy’ – elderly Israeli kidnapped in Ethiopia

Captors allow 79-year-old man to send voice message pleading for help to his family; kidnappers reportedly demanding hundreds of thousands of shekels in ransom.

Israeli officials are working with Interpol and the Ethiopian government for the safe return of an Israeli man kidnapped near the northern city of Gondar, the Foreign Ministry said in a media statement on Tuesday.

According to reports, the man is a 79-year-old immigrant to Israel of Ethiopian origin who traveled to the country in order to undergo a medical procedure.

He was reportedly kidnapped by a local criminal gang while on a trip to a nature site following his medical treatment, Mako reported.

“Help me. I am in the middle of the jungle,” the man said in a voice message sent to his family after the abduction, which was heard by Hebrew-language media.

“It’s pouring rain. Help me. I should have come back Sunday. I will probably be stuck here. Help me, my children. This trouble I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemies. Help me.”

The man’s captors are reportedly seeking a ransom of hundreds of thousands of shekels for his safe release.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that money, not terror, appeared to be the motivation for the kidnapping.

“The department for Israelis in distress overseas is in contact with the family in Israel and is working with Interpol on the matter,” the Ministry said. “The Israeli consul in Ethiopia is in contact with local security officials to secure the release of the Israeli as soon as possible, safe and sound.”

About 165,000 citizens of Ethiopian descent live in Israel, with some 67,800 having been born in the Jewish State.

Israel and Ethiopia share close diplomatic and economic ties, with frequent direct flights between the two countries and mutual embassies.
