Online Holocaust denial and antisemitism nearly tripled in 2022 – report

Social media giants not doing enough to purge antisemitic content, watchdog group warns, noting 180% increase in Holocaust denial and antisemitic content on the internet in 2022.

By World Israel News Staff

According to a report by Fighting Online Antisemitism (FOA), the prevalence of antisemitic, Holocaust-denying, and Israel-hating content on social media has surged by 180% in the past year.

FOA monitored major social networks, including Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, VK, and newer networks like Spotify, LinkedIn, Telegram, and GAB, reporting all instances of antisemitic content in accordance with the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and directly to the networks.

Sixty percent of all flagged posts were found on Twitter, while VK and Facebook followed with 14% and 10%, respectively.

FOA categorized all content into three groups: Holocaust denial, classical antisemitism, and hatred of Israel.

Around 64% of the content was classified as Holocaust denial and classic antisemitism, while 36% was aimed at Israel with calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and the desecration of its flag.

Only 5% of this content was taken down. Approximately 35% of posts were removed, including those containing conspiracy theories about supposed Jewish links to the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 epidemic.

Barak Aharon, FOA’s director of monitoring, stated that the findings indicate that social media giants are not doing enough to prevent the publication of antisemitic content.

The report called on social networks to adopt an uncompromising policy and actively take steps to prevent the distribution of such content. FOA founder and CEO Tomer Aldubi revealed that the watchdog trained over 200 volunteers over the past year to remove antisemitic content from the internet.

CyberWell, a group that employs AI models to monitor and combat antisemitism online, reported that only 2.3% of antisemitic posts on major social media networks involve calls for or attempts to justify violence against Jews. However, 90% of such posts were found on Twitter, rendering it the most violent network regarding antisemitic content.

All five major networks (TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube) have policies against expressions of antisemitism and Holocaust denial, but there are differences in the extent to which users can access such content.

Facebook denies a user trying to search for Holocaust denial-related expressions and recommends fact-checking, while Twitter imposes zero restrictions on searching for antisemitic content.

Although YouTube also primarily does not restrict searches, it has a more stringent enforcement policy, resulting in minimal results for such searches, with little to no authentic antisemitic content or Holocaust denial material. TikTok prohibits users from searching for Holocaust denial content and displays a message recommending verification of historical facts in both English and Arabic languages.

The report also highlighted that the types of stereotypes associated with Jewish people vary across social media platforms. On TikTok, Jews are often portrayed as exerting control over the world, while on Twitter, the primary stereotype is that Jews are greedy and obsessed with money.

In October, there was a surge in antisemitic posts on social media, which coincided with rapper Kanye West’s antisemitic remarks.

WATCH: Netanyahu lays wreath at Yad Vashem on Holocaust Remembrance Day

Following the siren sounded annually on Yom Hashoah throughout Israel, when people stand for a moment of silence in honor of the Jews murdered in the Holocaust, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu laid a wreath at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day 2023.

This year’s central theme was Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust: Marking 80 Years since the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

At the Knesset ceremony, the prime minister lit a candle in honor of the victims.

On Yom Hashoah, threatening letter with Nazi symbols sent to Smotrich

The English-language missive, which contains Nazi symbols, accuses the Religious Zionism Party leader of “intending to destroy Israel.”

By JNS

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich received a threatening letter with Nazi symbols on Tuesday, his office said.

The English-language letter accuses the Religious Zionism Party leader of “intending to destroy Israel.” Pictures taken of the letter by Smotrich’s office show a swastika along with the brief text.

It was received on the day that the country is observing Holocaust Remembrance Day, with somber events honoring the 6 million Jews murdered by the Germans and their collaborators during World War II.

An investigation into the incident was opened by the Magen Unit, which is entrusted with the security of ministers and deputy ministers. A police report is expected to be filed soon.

The letter comes a day after member of Knesset Boaz Bismuth from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party was heckled loudly while he was attempting to speak during an event at a Tel Aviv synagogue marking Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“I will not treat those who came here against me as enemies. We are brothers. We may not agree but we will not do to each other what has been done to us for many generations. It is legitimate that everyone has a different aspiration for Israel—but our fate is the same, certainly on an evening like this,” said Bismuth before having to cut his speech short for fear of violence.

Opponents of Netanyahu and his coalition’s judicial reform initiative have taken to the streets on a weekly basis since the proposed legislation was introduced at the beginning of the year. More recently, protests in support of the legal overhaul have taken place.

President Isaac Herzog has in his largely ceremonial role attempted to cool down the rhetoric around judicial reforms and has been hosting Knesset factions at his Jerusalem residence in the past weeks in an attempt to forge a compromise.

Father of antisemitic hate crime victim pleads for justice, slams Manhattan district attorney

At New York City Council Hearing, Joseph Borgen’s father criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, noting the assailant said he would do it again.

By Dion J. Pierre, The Algemeiner

The father of a Jewish man who was brutally assaulted and pepper sprayed in a 2021 antisemitic hate crime has criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Thursday for lightly punishing his son’s assailants.

Joseph Borgen was returning home from a pro-Israel event in New York City in 2021 when five men shouting antisemitic slurs, including 23-year-old Waseem Awawdeh, attacked him for being Jewish. Awawdeh repeatedly hit Borgen, who was wearing a kippah, with a metal crutch.

Despite the severity of the incident, in January, DA Bragg offered Awawdeh, who reportedly said he would commit a similar act if given the chance, just six months in jail and five years probation. He is currently free on $10,000 bail.

“They have film of this in black and white from people in the street and Times Square, it’s an open and shut case, and DA Bragg is just schlepping the case along with no solution,” the elder Borgen said during a judiciary committee hearing at the New York City Council. “One fellow, Waseem Awawdeh, was hitting my son with crutches and was offered a sweetheart deal, didn’t take it, yet he was let out on probation.”

Borgen added that Awadeh was allegedly involved in a road rage incident that violated the conditions of his bail.

“Bragg brought him again, nothing, just ‘go out and behave yourself,’ this will just embolden him and he doesn’t care,” Borgen continued. He also criticized Democratic lawmakers US Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY).

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has arrested four other assailants — Mahmoud Musa, Faisal Elezzi, Mohammed Said Othman, and a 14-year-old — connected to the Borgen assault.

New York and New Jersey combined for nearly 1,000 antisemitic incidents in 2022, seeing the first and third most in all 50 states, according to an annual audit by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). New York led the nation with 580 incidents, a 34% change from 2019, when there were 430.

Other data complied by Americans Against Antisemitism, a US based group founded in 2019, shows that Hasidic and Orthodox Jews in New York City are overwhelmingly represented in the area’s hate crime statistics, being targeted in 94 percent of all reported.

The violence has prompted eight major nonprofits from New York and New Jersey to create a supra-regional group for sharing and receiving information about threats to Jewish communities in the area.

El Al pilot makes shocking in-flight statement about Holocaust, sparking outrage

El Al needs to respect its status as Israel’s national airline and act accordingly, says Transportation Minister after pilot’s in-flight political rant.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News

An El Al pilot made an in-flight statement linking the potential reforms to Israel’s judicial system with the Holocaust on Yom HaShoah, Israel’s national day of mourning for Holocaust victims.

Addressing the cabin crew and passengers on a flight bound for New York on Tuesday morning, the pilot said that atrocities “like [the] Holocaust can only happen in a dictatorship, and we are fighting in Israel to remain a democratic country.”

The pilot’s words suggested that he was comparing plans to overhaul the justice system in Israel with events in Nazi-era Germany before the genocide of the Jewish people.

Preventing the reform of the judicial system was necessary for preventing massive human rights violations, he appeared to insinuate.

The pilot, who was identified by Walla News as Captain Doron Ginzburg, spoke in English.

A passenger told Ynet that he was “in shock that an El Al pilot allows himself to do this the plane, and in general compare, even in a metaphor, the subject of the Holocaust to what has been happening in the country lately.”

Israel’s Channel 14 journalist Boaz Golan ripped up his El Al ‘Fly Card’ on live TV Tuesday, saying he would boycott the airline until Ginzburg is dismissed from his position.

El Al Airlines swiftly condemned Ginzburg’s remarks, stating that it does not permit “political statements of any kind, by any of its employees as part of their work, and certainly not on its planes, which cannot be a platform for this type of activity.”

The company added that the comments were especially unwelcome “on such a sensitive and significant day for the people of Israel.”

The statement stressed that Ginzburg’s words do “not reflect the company’s people and values” and pledged that El Al would launch an investigation into the incident.

Several weeks ago, numerous El Al pilots refused to fly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara to Rome for a diplomatic visit, sparking a logistical challenge which was eventually solved when one pilot volunteered for the trip.

The transportation minister called El Al officials for a dressing-down after the incident, a source from her ministry told Ynet.

“Time after time, the pilots behave as if they are the masters of the country,” Transportation Minister Miri Regev reportedly said.

“This cannot continue, something bad is happening within [El Al.] The company needs to respect that it’s the national carrier and act accordingly. Maybe the flight paths are clear, but the company is losing direction.”
