Lebanon bans Cypriot airline due to minority owner being Israeli

Global Knafaim owns a 49.9% stake in TUS Airways, which was enough for Lebanon’s boycott of Israeli companies to come into effect.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Cyprus’ largest air carrier has been banned from Lebanese airspace due to it having an Israeli minority shareholder, Beirut’s civil aviation authority’s head announced Saturday.

“We have decided to prevent the Cypriot company TUS Air from flying in Lebanese airspace and from landing at Rafik Hariri International Airport, Beirut, until further notice,” director-general Fadi al-Hassan said in a statement reported by Lebanon’s National News Agency.

The airline came under scrutiny after the Cypriot Civil Aviation Authority informed its Lebanese counterpart that TUS would be providing air services between the two countries, al-Hassan explained. A routine internet check then revealed that an Israeli company, Global Knafaim, was a 49.9% shareholder in the company.

Global Knafaim is controlled by Knafaim Holdings Ltd, which has a controlling stake in Israel’s national carrier, El Al. The public company bought its almost-half share of TUS a year ago from the then-sole owner of the fleet, U.S. businessman Kenneth Woolley, for $5 million.

The fraction of a percentage that keeps the air carrier from officially being Israeli-owned did not stop Lebanon from invoking its boycott of all things Israel, which has been in effect since the Arab League invoked the prohibition after the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948. While the impact of the ban has decreased significantly over the decades, with enforcement being applied only irregularly, Lebanon still has the Boycott Israel law on its books and has decided to apply it in this case.

Proving the sporadic nature of the boycott’s application, the authority did not ban the now-bankrupt Ukrainian Aerosvit Airlines when its controlling shareholder in the 2000s was Jewish-Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi, who also holds Israeli and Cypriot citizenships.

The Larnaca-based airline, which was founded eight years ago, has only five Airbus A320-200 aircraft with a capacity of 180 passengers. While its current roster of destinations includes several European countries and Israel, the only Arab city on the list is Amman, Jordan. Its Tel Aviv route is popular, as Cyprus is less than an hour’s flight away, making it a favored destination for a quick vacation for many Israelis.

TUS gained the world’s spotlight briefly last year when it brought Israeli soccer fans to Doha, Qatar for the FIFA World Cup. They were the first commercial flights between the two countries that have no diplomatic relations.

Qatar had bowed to the FIFA rule barring discrimination against any country’s citizens from attending the competition.

Al-Hassan said the ban will remain in effect until further notice.

‘Capitulation, Israeli retreat’ – NGO blasts gov’t, Supreme Court for failing to raze illegal Bedouin outpost

Government dragging its feet on clearing illegal village, despite a legal pathway to do so; Supreme Court rules that government can’t be forced to start demolition process.

By World Israel News Staff

The Supreme Court rejected a petition aimed at forcing the government to demolish the illegal Khan Al-Ahmar outpost near Jerusalem on Sunday, writing that the state cannot be forced to raze the village due to security and diplomatic concerns.

The right-wing NGO Regavim, which primarily focuses on illegal Arab construction on state lands, had filed the motion to pressure the government into finally demolishing the outpost.

After a decades-long court battle, the Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that the Bedouins living at the site, located on the outskirts of the cit of Ma’ale Adumim, east of Jerusalem, had no rights to the land; nor did they construct their dwellings legally.

But despite permission from the Supreme Court to start demolition, the government has instead repeatedly postponed clearing the site.

Regavim’s petition, which was meant to force the government to execute the court’s decision, was rejected by the justices. In their ruling, they wrote that the government has the right to choose when and where to begin the evacuation process.

“The state’s capitulation to international pressure, and today’s Supreme Court decision granting that capitulation a seal of approval, are leading the State of Israel to the brink of anarchy,” a spokesperson from Regavim said in a media statement.

“The ground rules for Israeli retreat have been laid, and foreign concerns now have official confirmation that the Israeli government will back down from its own stated policies and national interests when pressure is applied.”

In late April, the right-wing government headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu filed yet another request with the Supreme Court to delay dismantling the community. The request was approved several days later.

Despite campaign promises from the Religious Zionist Party to dismantle the longstanding illegal outpost, the government has made it clear that it has no intention to do so any time soon.

‘Thugs’ threaten Jewish children in London, blast pro-terror music towards them

The incident occurred on Israel’s Independence Day. Police are searching for the perpetrators.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Two men in a passing car blasted music with lyrics praising the Hezbollah terrorist organization at Jewish schoolchildren walking in London on Israeli Independence Day, The Jewish Chronicle (JC) reported.

The two “thugs,” as the paper calls them, uploaded a 16-second clip of their deed, which they found hilarious, to TikTok. It shows the driver laughing as he drinks from a cup while a song blares out with Arabic lyrics that said in part, “We are Hezbollah, be our witness you son of the most righteous of prophets.”

The clip also shows their targets – small groups of Jewish children and a couple of adults standing among them on the sidewalk as the music plays. Some of the youngsters are holding Israeli flags.  the JC notes that two educational institutions are located in the immediate vicinity of the incident, Hasmonean Primary School and the Independent Jewish Day School.

The song is part of a soundtrack to a 2020 propaganda video that shows Hezbollah fighters in action and standing in military ranks, funeral scenes of their so-called martyrs, and a large group of young men giving the Nazi salute, among other antisemitic footage.

While it is only Hezbollah’s military wing that was outlawed in the UK in 2008, its political wing was proscribed in 2019 after a prolonged effort on Israel’s part to get London to understand that the two are inseparable parts of the Iranian-backed, Lebanon-based terror group. When the ban came into effect, the government clarified that being a member or inviting support for Hezbollah “will be a criminal offence, carrying a sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.”

The Community Security Trust (CST), a Jewish NPO that protects British Jews from antisemitic and related threats, is working together with the Metropolitan Police to track down the perpetrators.

A CST spokesman told the JC that they are also working to “gather evidence, both of the incident itself and the online hate that the video of the abuse has stirred up.”

Among the reactions of the TikTok viewers included such statements as, “Why not run them over? You missed the opportunity,” and suggestions about what could be the next audio selection – a “Hitler song” or “the Hamas album.”

Stand With Us UK, a group dedicated to fighting misinformation about Israel, wrote in reaction to the clip, “It is NOT normal for Jewish schoolchildren to be targeted and bullied because of their identity. However, it is a sad reality that many Jewish individuals and communities in the UK and around the world face. Antisemitic individuals are no longer hesitant to display their hate out in the open.”

One comment on the JC’s Twitter account blamed the incident on the recent influx of Muslim immigrants to the country.

“Hundreds of thousands of Muslims entered the UK last year,” he wrote. “These incidents will only increase. The Labour Party is soon going to be in power, and they are no friends of Jews. I feel bad enough about the future of this formerly great nation, but it must be terrifying for Jews.”

Last year, the Home Office, which is responsible for immigration, security, and law and order, reported that almost a quarter of the victims of a religious hate crime in the country were Jews even though they are fewer than one percent of the population.

An SUV careened into a group of predominantly Venezuelan men waiting at a bus stop across from the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, a migrant shelter.
