French luxury denim maker adopts Israeli sustainable tech

Denim exec calls Sonovia’s technology ‘the Tesla of indigo dyeing’ with the potential to revolutionize the jeans industry.

By Abigail Klein Leichman, Israel21c

Israeli green-tech company Sonovia has signed an agreement with French fashion giant Kering to integrate Sonovia’s yarn-dyeing technology into its denim production line for major luxury brands in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent.

The indigo dye market for the jeans industry is estimated at $1.5 billion a year. However, traditional indigo yarn dyeing processes require an average 60,000 liters of water per process and rely on polluting chemicals such as hydrosulfite.

Sonovia’s D(y)ENIM chemical-free indigo yarn dyeing ultrasound technology reduces water usage in the dyeing process by up to 85% and is 100% hydrosulfite free.

This technology enables a radical reduction in water consumption, chemical waste and energy expenditure.

The plug and play module can be implemented easily on any assembly line, making Sonovia’s technology accessible to a wide variety of global and traditional textile outlets.

As ISRAEL21c reported a year ago, Sonovia has been partnering with Italy-based international denim developer PureDenim, which is a partner in the agreement with Kering in development and scale-up of the denim technology.

“Sonovia’s technology is the ultimate step towards near-zero-impact indigo dyeing. Having forward-looking partners like Sonovia and Kering gives us courage to take on challenges that until yesterday seemed unattainable,” said Gigi Caccia, CEO of PureDenim.

Sonovia Chief Business Officer Roy Hirsch said the agreement with Kering “is confirmation that Sonovia’s indigo dyeing technology is the future technology for the textile industry. The agreement will revolutionize the textile industry and increase sustainability in the fashion world.”

Boycotting Ben-Gvir: EU cancels Tel Aviv reception, determined not to let him speak

“But ‘EU values’ are OK with embracing Holocaust deniers and Palestinian leaders who write Pay to Slay checks for the murder of Jews?”

By Atara Beck, World Israel News

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the right-wing Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Strength) party, was scheduled to address a diplomatic reception for European officials in Tel Aviv Tuesday, but the gathering was cancelled.

Each year, the Israeli government sends an official representative, and this year’s choice was rejected by the delegation in a near-unanimous vote; Poland and Hungary were the exceptions.

Other than the reception, the ‘Europe Day’ celebrations will be held.

“The EU Delegation to Israel is looking forward to celebrating Europe Day on May 9, as it does every year. Regrettably, this year we have decided to cancel the diplomatic reception, as we do not want to offer a platform to someone whose views contradict the values the European Union stands for,” it said in a statement.

> However, the Europe Day cultural event for the Israeli public will be maintained to celebrate with our friends and partners in Israel the strong and constructive bilateral relationship.

The decision to shun Ben-Gvir came as no surprise, as several delegation members had made it clear that they were unhappy about the choice of speaker and would likely not attend.

In a statement on Saturday, the delegation said, “We do not endorse the political views of Minister Ben-Gvir or those of his party. In fact, many of his previous statements and views contradict the values the European Union stands for.”

On Saturday evening, Ben-Gvir pushed back.

“The minister believes that even if EU representatives ‘do not endorse [his] political views,’ as they said in their statement, they understand very well that Israel is a democracy, and in a democracy, one can hear different views,” his spokesman said.

“Among other things, the minister will speak about the importance of the joint war on terrorism, will congratulate the European countries, will call for the strengthening of cooperation and will emphasize the need to unite around the fight against jihad and terrorists, and at the same time will point out that it is appropriate that the countries not finance projects against IDF soldiers and Israeli residents,” the statement added.

Regarding the cancellation of the reception, international human rights lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky noted the apparent hypocrisy.

“But ‘EU values‘ are OK with embracing Holocaust deniers and Palestinian leaders who write Pay to Slay checks for the murder of Jews?” he tweeted.

Israeli official: Chances of breakthrough with Riyadh slim this year

The consensus is that an agreement on normalization would take at least several months.

By Ariel Kahana, Israel Hayom via JNS

Against the backdrop of renewed efforts by the Biden administration to normalize ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, Israel Hayom‘s reporting indicates that a breakthrough in relations is unlikely to occur in the coming months and almost certainly not this year.

The conventional wisdom among Israeli policymakers is that the thaw in relations is only in its initial phase and that a full-fledged agreement on having the two sides normalize relations would take at least several months and perhaps even a year.

One of the main stumbling blocks in any breakthrough is the categoric objection Israel will likely raise to the Saudi request to get a green light from Washington for a civilian nuclear program. A diplomatic source told Israel Hayom that Jerusalem has long opposed the idea of any other Middle Eastern actor having nuclear capabilities. Riyadh has recently included this request as part of its conditions that have to be met before it moves to normalize ties with Israel.

Officials in Jerusalem have stressed that regardless of Israel’s stance, the chances of a breakthrough hinge more on President Joe Biden’s willingness to pivot away from his current policy towards the kingdom, which has seen relations reach a low point.

The U.S. has so far refused to change its posture towards the de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, whom Biden has accused of being behind the assassination of American resident and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

Israeli policymakers hope that even without a diplomatic opening with Saudi Arabia, the kingdom will continue with its balancing act: Having recently agreed to let China broker a rapprochement agreement with Iran, Riyadh might decide to bolster its relations with Washington in order to maintain its good standing with the other major world power.
