State Department slams Ben-Gvir’s ‘inflammatory’ visit to Temple Mount

The State Department slammed the national security minister’s “inflammatory rhetoric;” he had said Israel has sovereignty over Judaism’s holiest site.

The U.S. condemned National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount Sunday, during which he asserted Israel’s sovereignty over what is Judaism’s holiest site.

“We are … concerned by today’s provocative visit to the Temple Mount/Haram al Sharif in Jerusalem and the accompanying inflammatory rhetoric,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.

Ben-Gvir, who had deliberately refrained from joining over a thousand people who ascended the Mount during Jerusalem Day celebrations Thursday that marked the capital’s reunification in 1967, said in a short statement that he was “happy” to go to “the most important place for the people of Israel.”

“All the threats from Hamas will not help,” he continued, referring to the warnings of violence from the Gaza-based terrorist organization over Jewish visits to the area. “We are the owners of Jerusalem and the whole Land of Israel.”

Neither the threats of violence nor the frequent Palestinian riots on the Mount were mentioned in the American statement, which simply noted, “This holy space should not be used for political purposes, and we call on all parties to respect its sanctity.”

In what could be seen as a counterpunch to Ben-Gvir’s assertion of sovereignty, the State Department did make a point to “reaffirm the longstanding U.S. position in support of the historic status quo at Jerusalem’s holy sites and underline Jordan’s special role as custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.”

Jordan, for its part, joined Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Hamas in condemning the visit in much sharper terms.

According to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Ben-Gvir’s walk on the Mount was “a dangerous and unacceptable escalation” and “a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international law, and of the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its sanctities.”

Riyadh went even further, saying that the visit was “a provocation of the feelings of Muslims around the world” and that it “holds the Israeli occupation forces fully responsible for the repercussions of the continuation of these violations.”

Hamas’s Jerusalem spokesman Mohammed Hamada called on all Palestinians as well as Israeli Arabs to come en masse to the Al-Aqsa compound in order to oppose “all attempts to desecrate and Judaize it.”

Comparing Jews to animals, the terrorist group said that Israel would “bear responsibility for the barbaric incursions of its ministers and herds of settlers” over what it claimes is a solely Muslim holy site.

Foreign policy expert: US disengaging from Middle East

Focus on Ukraine and China will hurt Israel, both because Iran threat is being ignored and Arab states feel alliance with Washington is weaker, says Elliot Abrams.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

A foreign policy expert and adviser to three presidents said that the United States is disengaging from the Middle East to the detriment of its own interests and Israel’s, The Media Line reported.

Elliott Abrams, who served in three Republican administrations, including that of former president Donald Trump, told the news agency’s Spanish podcast Medio Oriente 123 that in his opinion, the Biden administration has shifted its focus to “the Ukraine war and on the competition with China. And it seems like they do not want to invest so much in solving the problems of the Middle East.”

This includes, first and foremost, a willful blind eye to the global danger that Iran presents, which he regards as the most pressing issue in the region.

“What is the U.S. policy toward Iran? Non-existent, in my opinion. There is no policy and, in the meantime, every month the Iranians keep progressing and getting closer to achieving a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Washington is also in danger of being seen as a paper tiger on this issue, he warned, since it isn’t vigorously challenging those who are breaking American sanctions against the Islamic Republic. China, he noted, has thrown a lifeline to Tehran with its huge oil trade, without facing consequences.

Sunni Arab allies have taken notice of American inaction against their foremost Shiite foe, which also includes ignoring Iran’s support for terrorism and aggressive actions against them, Abrams said. This is especially true of Saudi Arabia, which has experienced attacks by Iranian terror proxies with no response from America.

Concluding that it can no longer rely on Washington has led Riyadh to resume relations with Tehran in March through Chinese mediation, as a way to “hedge” its bets in protecting itself, he noted.

Another way the U.S. has shown weakness, and very visibly left the region, was its withdrawal from Afghanistan last year and its abandonment of its allies in the country, Abrams said.

This impression that Washington wants less and less to do in the Middle East is not good for Israel, he noted, because Arab states that thought they had an unspoken security partnership with Jerusalem and Washington may now think that this is “unachievable.”

In addition, in contrast to past decades when they saw Israel “as a country that has lots of influence in Washington,” they have noted the current strain between the Biden and Netanyahu administrations and may conclude that it doesn’t pay to be openly friendly with the Jewish state.

On the other hand, he added, the leading Arab country, Saudi Arabia, “has what they want,” which is an under-the-table security relationship with Israel. And they are convinced that Israel will act against Iran if Jerusalem feels the nuclear danger is too great, thereby removing Riyadh’s main regional enemy.

In any case, the veteran policy analyst opined, Riyadh will not normalize relations with Israel until Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman becomes king, as he has much less of an emotional attachment to the Palestinians than his father, the current monarch.

MBS, as he’s known, has already noted a list of things he would want from the U.S. in exchange for diplomatic recognition of Israel, and progress on Palestinian-Israeli peace was not on it.

Actual state of Kiev regime’s air defenses, military expert’s opinion – interview

“What we’re seeing now is… a ‘wartime arms expo’. And it certainly seems that way with various NATO systems being sent to the AFU. We have the ‘Patriot’, NASAMS, IRIS-T, ‘Hawk’, etc. Coupled with various Soviet-era ones, this ‘salad of systems’ is a real logistical nightmare that is bound to get worse, ” – Colonel Wolf.

New housing for Jews in Arab-majority Jerusalem neighborhood approved: report

Plan for 400 housing units for Jewish families receives initial approval, but similar plan approved 20 years ago was indefinitely shelved.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News

The Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee approved a plan last week to construct a Jewish enclave in Abu Dis, a town on the outskirts of eastern Jerusalem, according to a Zman Israel report.

Some 400 housing units for Jewish Israelis received initial approval for construction, but the plan must undergo additional reviews and revisions before building begins.

Political considerations, such as pressure from the Biden administration to avoid building in the area, may also prove to be a major factor as to whether the plan comes to fruition.

Because the Palestinians claim eastern Jerusalem as the capital of a potential future state, Jewish construction outside of the western part of the city is often a contentious issue.

Notably, a similar plan for 225 housing units for Jewish families was approved in 2000. Shortly afterwards, the plan was shelved indefinitely, and more than two decades later, no progress has been made regarding the initiative.

However, senior members of the Jerusalem Municipality said they were certain that the ruling right-wing government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would approve Jewish building in eastern Jerusalem and beyond.

Arieh King, deputy mayor of Jerusalem and a member of the Otzma Yehudit party, told Zman Yisrael that the current government had discussed budgeting for a new eastern Jerusalem road due to their “understanding of its strategic importance for the future” of the capital city.

King added that he was confident the government would also approve the “Kidmat Zion neighborhood plan that is planned on the borders of [that road.]”

“This is our big opportunity and we will not give up on it,” another official, speaking anonymously, told Zman Yisrael.

Earlier this year, the Israeli government twice agreed to freeze settlement building, construction, and expansion under pressure from the U.S.

In March, Israel committed to stop “settlement discussions” for up to half a year at a security summit in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh that was also attended by representatives from the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Jordan and the U.S.

The same day, a shooting attack by a Palestinian terrorist took place in Huwara, seriously injuring dual American-Israeli citizen David Stern.
