Yesh Atid issues ultimatum, threatens to end judicial reform talks if demands not met

President Herzog warned last month that lawmakers or parties who sabotage the negotiations will be judged harshly by history.

By World Israel News Staff

Ongoing talks aimed at securing a compromise between the right-wing ruling coalition headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Opposition parties regarding reforms to the judicial system have reached a breaking point, according to Hebrew language media.

Netanyahu agreed to freeze the legislation in March 2023 in order to “prevent civil war” after an unprecedented and likely illegal strike by Israel’s largest labor union saw schools, hospitals, municipalities, businesses, and even Ben Gurion Airport shuttered across the Jewish state.

Since then, little progress has been made on the issue. The talks, which have reportedly been stalled for weeks, have become increasingly tense after an ultimatum issued by negotiators on behalf of Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party.

The current sticking point for the opposition party is a proposal to give the coalition a built-in majority when it comes to appointing representatives to the Judicial Selection Committee, which appoints judges throughout Israel.

The coalition is trying to create a change in policy which would see more elected officials serve on the committee, giving politicians greater control over the selection process, though at the moment there are currently only two spots for MKs.

Yesh Atid is now demanding that one of their lawmakers, MK Karine Elharrar, be appointed to the Judicial Selection Committee, lest they cease participating in the negotiations.

The Knesset must name the two MKs on the committee by June 15th.

President Isaac Herzog, who is mediating the talks, said in a cryptic statement to Hebrew-language media that politicians or parties who do not approach the negotiations in good faith will be judged harshly by history.

In late April, Herzog told Channel 13 News that if the discussions are not successful and no compromise is reached, he “knows who is to blame,” adding that “this historic responsibility needs to be recorded somewhere.”

Echoing his comments in a later interview with Kan News, Herzog said that specific lawmakers were attempting to “pull the rug” on the compromise discussions.

He reiterated his warning that “whoever tries to harm the talks will carry the burden of historic responsibility for the fate of the state and the nation.”

Cockroach sparks terror attack panic in Tel Aviv

Several patrons injured at popular Tel Aviv cafe as diners stampede, overturning tables and trampling each other, according to eyewitnesses.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News Staff

Several patrons were injured at a Tel Aviv café on Saturday afternoon, after a woman who screamed when she saw a cockroach in the bar next door sparked panic that the eatery was under attack by terrorists.

Cafe Dizengoff, named after the main Tel Aviv thoroughfare on which the restaurant is located, is a popular brunch location in the White City. The café was packed with customers on Saturday, according to a Mako report.

However, the eatery devolved into chaos after a customer, who was drinking in a neighborhood bar directly next to Cafe Dizengoff, began screaming dramatically when she spotted a cockroach on the sidewalk.

Her nonstop shrieks were so intense that nearby patrons at the café believed that there was a terror attack in progress. There have been several major terror attacks on Dizengoff Street in recent years, including a shooting attack that killed one this March.

“It was the scariest thing that ever happened to me,” an eyewitness who dined at Cafe Dizengoff told Mako.

“Suddenly there was screaming, people panicked and overturned tables, and everyone started yelling and running and trampling each other. There were many glasses and plates shattered, and people tripped and fell and got cut on the glass while other people stepped on them.”

Pictures from the scene circulating on social media showed smashed plates and cups, along with tables knocked on their sides. The diners’ personal items left behind during the rush to flee, such as sunglasses, purses, and even a shoe, were also visible.

“People were frightened by the screams and started running away, knocking over tables,” another eyewitness told Mako. “Because of the chaos, there were people who were injured. I saw an older man with blood on his face, he appeared to be in shock. I also saw two young girls whose legs were all cut up.”

At least “five police cars and an ambulance responded to the scene,” the witness said. “It was terrible.”

Three Dead and Five Injured at Memorial Day Biker Rally Shootout

A tragic shooting occurred this weekend at the 41st Annual Red River Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally in Red Rock, New Mexico, resulting in three fatalities and five injuries.

On Saturday, a Memorial Day motorcycle rally was taking place in the mountain town of Red River, located 75 miles northeast of Santa Fe, when a group of bikers began shooting at each other.

According to Mayor Linda Calhoun, three people were killed, and five were injured in the altercation. When asked about the identity of the bikers involved, Calhoun simply stated that they were all from out of town.

One of the injured was airlifted to a hospital in Denver. At the same time two hospitals went into lockdown. Law enforcement was present at Holy Cross Medical Center and The University of New Mexico Hospital to treat the wounded.

At the time of the shooting, 28,000 bikers from different backgrounds attended the event, which featured live music.

As a precaution, Taos imposed an emergency curfew starting at 10 PM Saturday night and prohibited alcohol sales, which was announced on the town’s Facebook page. Additionally, the State Police requested that the public stay away from Red River as they conducted their investigation.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has offered assistance in the investigation, as the Phoenix Field Division stated in a tweet.

Nasrallah threatens war if Israel ‘takes a wrong step’

Israel is weak and we can hit all of it, Hezbollah leader claims in a speech marking Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah threatened Israel Thursday with a major war in a speech marking Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

Speaking on what Hezbollah dubbed the “Day of Resistance,” the terror chief addressed the IDF, saying: “You are not the ones threatening war, it is we who do so, and any such war will include all of Israel’s borders.”

Nasrallah’s Iranian-backed organization has “hundreds of thousands of fighters,” he claimed, who would participate in the fight.

A “major war,” he added, could be the result of “any wrong action in Palestine, Syria or Iran.”

Israel “is facing an ideological retreat” and has been weakened, Nasrallah further claimed, while the Palestinians have grown stronger.

“After the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 and the withdrawal from Gaza, the concept of ‘Greater Israel’ no longer exists,” he said. “Today, it hides behind walls of fire and is unable to impose its terms in any negotiations with the Palestinians….. One of the most important transformations that have taken place is the deterrent power of the resistance forces. The Israelis failed to strengthen their own deterrent power, and realized that they will pay the price for every crime they commit.”

The Jewish state’s major backer is also having trouble, which will directly affect Israel’s abilities as well, he noted.

“American hegemony no longer exists in the world, and the mentality in the Arab world has shifted, and this is what worries Israel,” Nasrallah maintained.

The longtime leader of Hezbollah was reacting in part to a speech IDF Intelligence head Maj.-Gen. Aharon Haliva gave Wednesday in which he described a “high potential for escalation in the region” but sent the warning that Israel is prepared and should not be trifled with.

“Unfortunately, Nasrallah is close to making a mistake that could degenerate the region into a major war. He is close to this mistake from Lebanon and Syria,” Haliva said at Reichman University’s annual Herzliya Conference.

He referred to a Hezbollah operative who had infiltrated from Lebanon in March and set off an explosive at Megiddo Junction, injuring an Israeli-Arab driver, which he noted was “not a one-time story” because Nasrallah thinks he can start up with Israel again.

“We need to be prepared for our enemies not to understand the message we are conveying. Make no mistake, we are ready to use force and will do everything possible and everything necessary to bring quiet,” Haliva said.

While the intelligence chief did not denigrate Washington’s strength as Nasrallah did, calling it the “omnipotent power” and still “the global policeman” whose policy “shapes the entire world,” he did seem to imply that Israel’s “peerless ally” was currently dealing with many difficulties, including competition with China and internal ideological battles that are far from over.

This, in addition to “entire global processes,” including the current economic crisis, has led to “all the players” understanding “that it is impossible to just lean on one pillar no matter how good it is,” he said, “and therefore agreements are signed, alliances are formed and the State of Israel needs to examine in depth its position in the region in the face of these developments.”

Haliva then struck a positive note, saying, “Even today Israel is an asset country. It has technological, military, intelligence capabilities and a strong economy, and it is a powerful country that needs to take advantage of its assets. This requires a partnership with the US and an understanding of the tapestry that is developing and where it is right for us to position ourselves.”

Israelis brace for flash floods

Stormy weather and heavy rains expected across Israel, raising concerns of flash floods.

By TPS

Israel is bracing for an unusual late spring storm that is expected to bring heavy rains in the southern part of the country over the next few days. Ordinarily, the rain season in this region ends bet late May and, while there may be some light rain here and there, heavy rains are rare.

The Israel Police warned the public that the heavy rains are expected to cause flash flooding in a number of remote areas popular for hiking in the south and in the Dead Sea and Judean Desert region so people should stay away from them.

Drivers are urged to be cautious and to drive carefully and not to approach flood zones and reservoirs and not to cross flowing streams

The Israel Police is preparing to block roads and hiking trails in order to protect the lives and safety of road users.

By the end of the week a heat wave is expected throughout the country.

Two people were killed when flash floods hit Israel last month, leaving dozens stranded in low-lying areas.

Israeli police and IDF forces rescued 36 people during the floods, and found the remains of two people who drowned near Highway 40 in the lower Negev/Arava region by Nahal Tsihor.

Armed terrorist shot and killed outside of synagogue near Hebron

Terrorist who infiltrated Israeli town during Shavuot holiday while carrying knife shot and killed by security guard just outside of synagogue.

By JNS

A civilian security guard on Friday shot and killed an armed Palestinian terrorist who had infiltrated the Israeli community of Tene Omarim, near Hebron.

Security camera footage shows the terrorist, identified by Arab media as Alaa Kisiya, casually walking up to the village and sliding under its security gate, and then roaming around with a knife in his right hand.

He passed a playground full of women and children before approaching the synagogue. He was then neutralized by a member of Tene Omarim’s security force.

No civilians were hurt in the incident, which occurred during the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

The Israel Defense Forces is investigating the incident, and “extensive” forces swept the community to ensure that no other terrorists had entered, the military said in a statement.

“Thank God, a great miracle occurred on the morning of Shavuot. An Arab terrorist from nearby Dhahiriya managed to penetrate unhindered through the gate of the settlement into the center of the settlement. Worshipers in the synagogue recognized the knife he was holding in his hand, immediately neutralized him and prevented a big disaster,” said Ari Odes, the town secretary.

Tene  Omarim “is a quiet and safe settlement that became vulnerable in a moment. God forbid, the incident could have ended differently. At this time we are still investigating the incident with the army and will work together to increase the sense of security of the residents in an effort … to prevent a similar event in the future,” Odes continued.

Also on Friday, a 9-year-old Israeli girl was wounded by a stray bullet while walking in the Jewish community of Kochav Ya’akov in the Mateh Binyamin Regional Council.

She was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem in light to moderate condition.

The IDF Home Front Command issued an alert for a terrorist infiltration, calling on the residents to enter their homes, but it was subsequently determined that the bullet had come from outside the community.

Drop in turnout for 21st weekend of anti-government protests

Labor party head Merav Michaeli gave a speech at a protest near Karkur amid booing and heckling.

By World Israel News Staff

Tens of thousands of people protested in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities against the government’s judicial reform plans for the 21st Saturday, days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the issue would return to the agenda following the passage of the state budget.

Some 80,000 people gathered at the main protest on Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv, a significant drop from previous weeks which saw as many as 200,000 people demonstrators.

Former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon addressed the protesters, saying the recently approved budget was one suited to “a dictatorship.”

“We are here to say in a loud and clear voice: Israel won’t be a dictatorship, only a democracy. We won’t forget your repeated lies and the venomous machine you built,” he said.

He also slammed opposition leader Yair Lapid and National Unity chairman Benny Gantz for their participation in ongoing negotiations with the government, “You are talking to [Netanyahu] and his people? About what, about a dictatorship, salami-style?”

Meanwhile, Gantz told protesters in Hod Hasharon that he, Lapid, and others involved in the negotiations had managed to “stop Israel’s gallop to disaster.”

“We will do everything in order to reach agreements while protecting our principles in order to preserve Israeli democracy,” he said.

Labor party head Merav Michaeli gave a speech at a 2,000-person protest near Karkur in northern Israel, amid booing and heckling. Protesters shouted “resign!” in apparent discontent over her decision-making in the beleaguered party.

“So there were some people in front of the stage who shouted abuse, it happens. I believe in my way,” Michaeli said in response.

WATCH: New York’s CUNY Law School hides keynote speech by woman accusing Israel of ‘raining bullets and bombs’ on Palestinians

The City University of New York (CUNY) Law School released a video of a commencement ceremony speech in which the speaker accused Israel of “indiscriminate” murder, “raining bullets and bombs,” encouraging “lynch mobs against Palestinians,” and “settler colonialism.”

The City University of New York (CUNY) Law School had hidden the video at first after coming under intense criticism.

It was the second year in a row that the far-left law school’s commencement speaker devoted most of their address to spreading anti-Israel lies.

As the speaker, Fatima Mohammed, noted, both CUNY’s student body and faculty have endorsed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

“This is the law school that passed and endorsed BDS on a student and faculty level, recognizing that absent a critical imperialism settler colonialism lens, our work and the school’s mission statement is void of value as Israel continues to indiscriminately rain bullets and bombs on worshipers, murdering the old, the young, attacking the funerals and graveyards as it encourages lynch mobs,” Mohammed said.

“We are the student body and faculty that fought back when the investor-focused administration attempted to cross the BDS picket line, saying loud and clear that Palestine can no longer be the exception to our pursuit of justice, that our morality will not be purchased by investors,” she said.

“May we rejoice in the corners of our New York City bedroom apartments and dining tables, may it be fuel for the fight against capitalism, racism, imperialism, and Zionism around the world,” she concluded.

The Anti-Defamation League said, “Graduations should be a place for all — not a time to denigrate students’ identities.”

“We are appalled to see such an egregious display of hostility toward ‘Zionists’ (which is how many Jews see themselves) and Israel in CUNY Law’s commencement address,” the ADL said.
