U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant met on June 15 in Brussels “to discuss opportunities to expand military cooperation to counter regional threats,” per a U.S. Defense Department readout.

The two leaders “discussed important developments in the U.S.-Israeli bilateral defense partnership, U.S. security assistance for Israel and efforts to increase partnership and interoperability,” according to Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson.

Gallant and Austin agreed to keep collaborating to address “the wide range of threats posed by Iran, including its nuclear program, destabilizing regional activities and proliferation of uncrewed aerial systems and other lethal assistance throughout the Middle East and to Russia,” the readout stated.

Austin “lauded Israel’s continued integration into the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, and he expressed the department’s intent to strengthen the regional security architecture and to further multilateral cooperation with regional partners,” per the readout. (Dana Stroul, the Pentagon’s top Middle East policymaker, recently told JNS that it was a “brilliant” decision of the Trump administration to transfer Israel to CENTCOM.)

Great to meet @YoavGallant in Brussels. The U.S. commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad.  We discussed the bilateral defense partnership, regional security, and opportunities to deepen cooperation.

Austin and Gallant also discussed Russia’s aggression in Ukraine with Austin noting “profoundly negative” consequences for Ukraine, and the Middle East, in Russia and Iran cooperating militarily. Both Ukraine and others in the region “are being attacked with Iranian-made uncrewed aerial systems,” per the readout.

The U.S. official also “expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the West Bank,” encouraging de-escalation and emphasizing U.S. support for a two-state solution. “Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact,” the Pentagon added.

Israel Antiquities Authority shocked at volume of treasures netted by new campaign to anonymously return illegally held items

A 1,700-year-old anchor was returned by a citizen who found it while in a diving expedition off of Palmachim beach in 1996.

By World Israel News Staff

In a nationwide campaign this month, Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and the Ministry of Heritage have reported the return of thousands of illegally held antiquities by citizens.

The operation, titled “If it’s old – return it with a click!”, was originally scheduled to end on Thursday but has been extended for another week due to an unexpected volume of returns, including a 1,700-year-old anchor.

Yair Amitzur, the director of IAA’s educational initiatives for the central region, expressed surprise at the quantity and diversity of items being returned. “We knew that people had things at home, but we had no idea what they had,” he said. “We’re seeing that people are returning things from the entire timeline of Israel’s history, all kinds of pottery from all of the periods, even things from prehistory.”

The bounty includes bronze items, jewelry, metal tools, and stone carvings, among other finds, Amitzur said.

In a remarkable discovery, a citizen named Moshe returned a 1,700-year-old anchor that he found while in a diving expedition off of Palmachim beach in 1996. The lightweight, small anchor is a rare find as most anchors discovered are much larger and heavier, according to Kobi Sharvit, the director of IAA’s Maritime Archaeology Unit. Sharvit believes the anchor, likely from the Roman period, was probably used for a small fishing boat.

Apart from the anchor, other significant items returned include two bronze handles with lion-like heads from a Roman-period wooden coffin, Hasmonean coins from the time of the Great Maccabean Revolt, Crusader-period cannon balls from Akko, and an intricately carved stone coffin that has been used as a bench at Kibbutz Yagur, near Haifa, for over a century.

The campaign allows anyone to contact the IAA or the Ministry of Heritage through various platforms to report and return their privately held antiquities, without facing any consequences. The response to the campaign indicates a greater awareness among the public about the importance of these artifacts and the law stating that any item created before 1700 CE is considered an antiquity and automatically belongs to the state.

Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu underscored the significance of the campaign, stating that the returned antiquities will aid in constructing the historical narrative of the Land of Israel. Eli Eskosido, the director-general of the IAA, further emphasized the importance of preserving these artifacts against the ravages of time. “Some of them will go on display, and could possibly further inform us about the country’s past,” Eskosido added.

Family of Four Die After Teen Drives Off 30 Foot Cliff

Tragically, a seventeen-year-old girl, her father, and two siblings from Idaho died in an automobile accident on Saturday. The family had been traveling 274 miles from their home in Spokane, Washington, to Council, Idaho, to visit their grandfather in hospice care.

It is believed that the teen, Dakota, had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to drive off the highway and become airborne. As a result, the vehicle flipped over and plunged 30 feet into the Salmon River. According to the incident report, the accident was likely due to fatigue from the long drive.

A local fisherman discovered their vehicle partially submerged, leading the police to believe the family most likely died by drowning. Zella Blair, the former partner of Miller and the mother of Jack and Delilah, told KREM2 how her family was in shock regarding the news.

She expressed her grief by saying she could not imagine not having her children come home after school and calling for her anymore. Blair had dropped off Jack and Delilah for the Friday weekend without knowing of Miller’s plans to visit their grandfather.

3 Young Boys Found Fatally Shot in Yard

On Thursday, authorities reported a piece of tragic news from Ohio that three brothers, aged 3,4 and 7, were shot dead, and their mother was also injured. The Clermont County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred at a residence in Monroe Township.

It all began when a female caller called the police around 4:15 pm, screaming that her babies had been shot. Shortly after, a passerby driving on the road called 911 again, saying that a female juvenile was running down the road, screaming that her father was killing everyone.

The sheriff’s officers responding to the incident at Laurel Lindale Road found the boy’s father, Chad Doerman, 32 years old, sitting on the porch outside the house, where he was detained for questioning.

On the scene, the three boys were found in the yard with gunshot wounds. Efforts were made to save the boys, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. The boys’ 34-year-old mother, who was also outside, had been shot in the hand. It was while she was in the hospital that authorities revealed to her that her sons had passed away.

There were no indications of forced entry into the home, and no other suspects were being sought. In a statement, New Richmond Exempted Village School District Superintendent Tracey Miller expressed her sorrow, asking the community to pray for all affected by this tragedy. The tragic murders are still being investigated.
