UK, Australia and Canada press Israel to reverse approval of new construction in Judea and Samaria

Britain, Australia, and Canada protest Israel’s decision to approve 5,700 new housing units in Judea and Samaria, calling on Jerusalem to rescind plan easing approval process.

By David Rosenberg, World Israel News

The UK, Canada, and Australia are pressing Israel to rescind its approval of thousands of new housing units in Jewish towns in Judea and Samaria, warning the new construction could fuel violence in the already turbulent region.

On Friday, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, and British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs James Cleverly released a joint statement saying they are “deeply concerned” by Israel’s approval of more than 5,700 new housing units for towns in Judea and Samaria.

“The Foreign Ministers of Australia, Canada and the UK are deeply concerned by recent events in Israel and the West Bank which further reduce the prospects for peace,” the Australian, British, and Canadian foreign ministries said.

“We are gravely concerned by the Government of Israel’s approval on June 26 of over 5,700 new settlement units in the West Bank. We are also concerned by the changes to the settlement approval process instituted by the Government of Israel on June 18, which facilitate swifter approval of construction in settlements.”

“The continued expansion of settlements is an obstacle to peace and negatively impacts efforts to achieve a negotiated two-state solution. We call on the Government of Israel to reverse these decisions.”

“We are also deeply troubled by the continued violence and loss of life in Israel and in the West Bank. We unequivocally condemn all forms of terrorism and violence against civilians, including the terrorist attack on June 20 in Eli targeting Israeli civilians.”

“We also condemn the reprehensible and ongoing settler violence targeting Palestinians. We welcome the joint statement from the heads of the Israel Defense Forces, Israel Security Agency and the Israel Police as well as statements by other Israeli leaders condemning these acts. We call on authorities to ensure accountability for all perpetrators of violence. The cycle of violence in Israel and the West Bank must be broken.”

On Monday, the Israeli Defense Ministry’s planning committee for Area C of Judea and Samaria approved 5,700 new housing units for communities in Judea and Samaria. The latest units raise the total number of homes approved in Judea and Samaria this year to over 13,000 – more than the number approved during the entire year of the previous annual record, set during the 2020.

A week earlier, the government approved a plan shortening the approval process for housing permits in Judea and Samaria, easing the bureaucratic red-tape on new construction.

Ignoring safety concerns, ex-PM doubles down on support for airport protest

Ehud Olmert says ‘impolite protest’ necessary to stop judicial reform, brushes off safety concerns around blocking airport.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News

Former prime minister Ehud Olmert reiterated his support for disruptive demonstrations against judicial reform, refusing to condemn a plan to block Ben Gurion Airport on Monday afternoon despite pleas from safety officials that the protest could harm public safety.

Organizers of several anti-judicial reform protest groups have stated their intention to gather at Israel’s main international airport during peak rush hour traffic and a popular day for travel as schoolchildren are now on summer break.

Protest leaders have threatened to create massive disruption at the travel hub, should a bill aimed at ending the so-called “reasonability” clause, often cited by the Supreme Court, remain on the Knesset agenda.

On Sunday morning, Central District police commander Avi Biton pleaded with protesters to call off the protest. Citing an incident overnight Saturday in which a commercial flight was forced to make an emergency landing at the airport due to a technical malfunction, Biton noted in a public statement that blocking traffic and roads around the travel hub could potentially result in loss of human life.

“I call on protest organizers: Show responsibility so that a disaster will not happen that we will regret,” Biton said. “The traffic lanes in the Ben Gurion Airport area are defined as emergency roads and must be left open for rescue services at all times.

Olmert, a vehement opponent of proposed legislation to reform Israel’s legal system and longtime enemy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, refused to back down from his support for what he called “impolite protests” in an interview with Army Radio on Sunday morning.

“I support the demonstration, and I don’t think that any of the organizers of the demonstration talked about disruptions at the airport or damage to its ability to function, these are things that the opponents of the protest say, but that is not what the people of the protest are saying, the intention is to have an impolite demonstration,” Olmert said.

Notably, organizers of the protest have specifically cited disruption to the airport’s normal operation as the goal of the demonstration, and have encouraged travelers to take the train rather than drive to the airport – indicating that they plan to block roads and snarl traffic in the area.

“The purpose of the demonstrations is to make it clear to the government that there is a powerful movement that [represents] infrastructure of Israeli society, in the economic, creative, academic, in any field,” Olmert continued.

“These demonstrations want to make the government back down [from judicial reform legislation]I support them, with emphasis on the fact that there is no intention to do anything illegal or violent, and I am sure that there will be no violent aspect.”

Numerous anti-judicial reform demonstrations have been marred by multiple violent incidents, as activists have physically attacked police officers and motorists attempting to avoid illegal road blocks and closures created by demonstrations.

‘Shut up or declare war’ – Hezbollah won’t remove outpost in Israeli territory

Lebanese MP from Hezbollah’s political branch says terror group won’t clear outpost from Israeli territory, dares Jerusalem to launch war in order to do so.

By World Israel News Staff

A Lebanese Hezbollah MP told local media that the terror group refuses to dismantle an outpost it established in Israeli territory, and that Jerusalem could declare war should they want to clear the encampment.

“The enemy is demanding the removal of the two tents and prefers that the resistance do it because it doesn’t want to enter into an undesirable war,” Muhammad Raad, a member of Hezbollah’s political faction in the Lebanese parliament, told local Arabic-language media.

“If you don’t want war, shut up and walk back [the demand],” he added.

Several weeks ago, operatives from the Hezbollah terror group set up several tents on the Israeli side of the Blue Line border between the two countries.

In an attempt to avoid a direct confrontation with Lebanon, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan has called upon the United Nations’ UNIFIL peacekeeping force – which is responsible for maintaining the status quo along the explosive border – to clear the outpost.

Erdan noted in an open letter to the international body that it bears “the responsibility to ensure the removal of all Hezbollah’s military outposts along the Blue Line,” stressing that “Israel will not accept any violation of its sovereignty and retains the right to take all necessary measures to protect its territory.”

However, while the UN has acknowledged that the encampment violates Israeli sovereignty and is illegal under international law, the organization has dragged its feet regarding practical steps to remove the outposts.

“Our goal is to move the outpost out of there. We prefer [that] Hezbollah will do it themselves than to bomb it. We made that clear to the U.S. and they made that clear to people in Lebanon,” a senior Israeli official told Axios.

‘Foreign agent’ – Russia names former Moscow Chief Rabbi as ‘disinformation spreader’

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt disseminated “false information” about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to a Kremlin statement.

By World Israel News Staff

The longtime former Chief Rabbi of Moscow, who fled Russia in March 2022 some two weeks after the invasion of Ukraine, was officially declared a “foreign agent” by the Russian government over the weekend.

Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, who served as the highest authority in the Russian capital’s Jewish community for more than 30 years, disseminated “false information about the decisions made by public authorities of the Russian Federation and their policies,” according to a press statement from the Kremlin.

Being labeled as a “foreign agent” comes with serious implications for Goldschmidt, including that he may face prosecution on criminal charges should he return to Russia.

Goldschmidt responded in a statement posted to his Twitter account that he is “proud to be on the right side of history and to join the list of people opposing this terrible war that has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands.”

He added that “for 30 years, I nurtured and protected Moscow’s Jewish community, and no decision will prevent me from continuing to do so.”

The rabbi stressed that he believes “Russia has turned for the worse,” noting that “this is the first time since the beginning of the war that a religious leader has been declared a foreign agent and defined by the Russian government as a hostile threat.”

Goldschmidt urged Russian Jews to seek refuge outside the country, charging that the designation is reflective of a new atmosphere of persecution aimed at local Jews.

“It’s very likely that this will mean the start of a new antisemitic campaign against the Jewish community in Russia,” he wrote. I’ve previously called on the local Jewish community to leave the country before it’s too late.”

In January 2023, Goldschmidt told the far-left Guardian newspaper why he had left his post as Chief Rabbi of Moscow during the onset of the war.

“Pressure was put on community leaders to support the war, and I refused to do so,” he told the UK outlet.

“I resigned because to continue as chief rabbi of Moscow would be a problem for the community because of the repressive measures taken against dissidents.”

Syrian anti-aircraft battery hit after missile explodes over Israel

Shrapnel from the Syrian missile was found in the southern Bedouin town of Rahat.

By JNS

Israeli fighter jets struck an anti-aircraft battery in Syrian territory on Saturday night after a Syrian anti-aircraft missile exploded in Israeli airspace, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The missile exploded over southern Israel, with shrapnel found in the Bedouin town of Rahat. The IDF said that there were no casualties, and no special instructions were issued following the incident. No sirens were activated. Residents of the south and center reported hearing the explosion.

“It fell right next to the children’s bedroom, we were very lucky,” a Rahat resident was quoted as saying by Kan News.

Simultaneously with the missile’s detonation shortly after midnight, Syrian media reported air defenses had responded to an Israeli aerial attack in the Homs area in the western part of the country.

The Israeli attack came from northeast of Beirut, and caused material damage, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported.

Rahat is some 257 miles from Homs and around 142 miles from the Syrian border. Reports indicated that the Syrian missile was a Russian-made S-200 long-range surface-to-air missile.

The last Israeli airstrike in Syria took place on June 14th, leaving one soldier outside of Damascus injured.

Children eagerly took selfies while brandishing rocket launchers.

By World Israel News Staff

The Hamas terror group showcased its weapons to the public for the first time at an exhibition in Gaza City, drawing hundreds of Palestinians, including children, who eagerly took selfies while brandishing rocket launchers.

Dressed in black balaclavas and tactical camouflage suits, members of the terror group’s armed wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, interacted with attendees in in Gaza City’s Unknown Soldier’s Square, Agence France-Presse reported.

Hamas extended an invitation through social media and posters in mosques, stating, “Resistance is an image and a memory. Take souvenir photos with many of Al-Qassam’s weapons.”

The showcased weapons included a variety of locally manufactured missiles, “Shihab” drones, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and Russian-made “Kornet” missiles. The exhibition held in Gaza City on Friday was the first of several scheduled events across the Gaza Strip, allowing public access to military sites typically off-limits to civilians and marking the first instance that the terror group has allowed the public to photograph their weapons openly.

Abu Mohammed Abu Shakian, a Gaza resident, expressed his support, telling AFP: “I came with my family to take photos with the weapons and reinforce the spirit of resistance in our children.”

Shahadeh Dalou, another attendee with his children, saw the exhibition as a sign of nearing liberation.

“Everyone is happy and proud of the Al-Qassam exhibition. We are here because we’re proud of the resistance,” he said, according to AFP.

Bassam Darwish, 58, stated that people were proud to support the Al-Qassam Brigades and the resistance they represent.

‘First-degree’ threat against Netanyahu found at brother Yoni’s grave

A suspect was arrested for writing a letter instructing the prime minister to “conquer Gaza and retrieve Hadar Goldin’s body.”

By World Israel News Staff

Israeli police on Saturday night arrested a man suspected of placing a handwritten “first degree” threat against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the grave of his brother, Yoni, on Mount Herzl.

The suspect, a 26-year-old from southern Israel, was brought in for questioning by the Cyber Unit of Lahav 433 and the Shin Bet security agency.

The Hebrew and English letter, which was found on the grave on Friday read: “This is a threat of the first degree, red alert level.”

“Bibi, you are no better than [late prime minister Ariel] Sharon,” the letter said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname. “Sharon got a stroke and went into an eight-year coma. To you I wish even worse things.”

The letter outlined two missions for Netanyahu: to “conquer” Gaza and bring back the body of “my counselor” Hadar Goldin as well as that of Oron Shaul. The bodies of the two IDF soldiers, as well as two civilians with a history of mental health issues, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, are being held by the Hamas terror group in Gaza. The letter went on to warn that “time was running out” and gave a deadline of just under four months.

The Shin Bet in a statement said it had “no intention of allowing a deliberate threat against a prime minister that was placed on the grave of an Israeli hero pass, and they will handle the incident with all the tools at their disposal.”

Yoni Netanyahu was killed in the Ugandan capital of Entebbe during a 1976 IDF commando raid to free Israeli and Jewish hostages whose airplane had been hijacked by Palestinian terrorists.

Group of Men Break into Home and Violently Beat Man with Spiked Hammer

This week, a 59-year-old man from Texas was arrested after allegedly breaking into another man’s house and declaring that he owned the property. He then dragged the victim outside and hit him with a mallet with nails protruding from its head.

According to reports, Mark Sanchez had arrived at the victim’s house in Bexar County on Monday night. Several other individuals accompanied him. Sanchez allegedly asserted that he owned the home and commanded the victim to vacate immediately. They then began to assault him. The victim, who was not identified, told the police that Sanchez was armed with a dangerous weapon during the attack. It was described as a mallet that had nails driven into the head of it.

Afterward, the individuals reportedly dragged the victim outside. They continued to beat him until the victim could escape and call the police. Officers of the San Antonio Police Department allegedly found the head of a mallet with multiple nails sticking out and a trail of what seemed to be blood leading out of the victim’s door. Sanchez was arrested after he returned to the victim’s home with a gun and threatened to kill him.

It is currently unknown whether the suspect and victim were acquainted prior to the attack.

Sanchez was apprehended on Wednesday evening and was charged with a second-degree felony for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail with a bond of $100,000.
