Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday fired special antisemitism envoy Noa Tishby after she spoke out against his government’s plans for judicial reform.

“It is with disappointment and sadness, but an enduring determination, that I can confirm that the current Israeli government has dismissed me as Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism and the Delegitimization of Israel,” Tishby said on Sunday.

Tishby, who was appointed by then foreign minister Yair Lapid, voiced her suspicions that the reason for her termination was over her criticism of the reform proposal.

“It is not possible for me to know if their decision was driven by my publicly stated concerns about this government’s ‘judicial reform policy.’ But given the reality that antisemitism continues its dangerous rise globally, and the threat to Israel’s existence through delegitimization policies has not slowed, it is difficult to come to any other reasonable conclusion,” she said.

She went on to note that “the threat to Jews around the world is as significant today as any other point since the Holocaust, and the risks to Israel are as great today as they have been since our nation’s birth.”

Nevertheless, she said, her decision to speak out “was not taken lightly.”

“I voiced concerns because I believe absolutely in the importance of an independent judiciary in safeguarding the democratic system. Open and honest debate with those in government is at the core of Israel’s long-term well-being and our status as the region’s single consistent democracy. True patriotism involves standing up for the values and principles that form the foundation of our nation, even when it means questioning or opposing policies implemented by this or any government,” Tishby said.

She added that she would remain committed to “fighting antisemitism and the delegitimization of Israel on the global stage.”

In March, Tishby called the current Israeli government “extreme,” and publicly criticized the judicial reform plan, telling Bill Maher, without any supporting data, that the reforms are opposed by a majority of Israelis and are unlikely to pass.

New DNA evidence proves that the Muslim Bedouin who was shot and killed in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday had grabbed the gun of a police officer and carried out a terror attack despite claims to the contrary, the police said on Sunday evening.

Tests found the DNA of 26-year-old Mohammed Elasibi, from the southern town of Hura, on a police officer’s gun that Elasibi was accused of firing during a skirmish with police officers at the Chain Gate near Temple Mount. Elasibi was shot and killed by police after firing several rounds at border police officers.

“The DNA of the terrorist who carried out a terror shooting at the Chain Gate on Friday night was found on the police handgun that the terrorist grabbed from the policeman and used to shoot at officers,” police said on Sunday in a statement.

“This was unequivocally a weapon grab and terrorist shooting attack — just as we reported on the night of the attack,” police said, adding that the DNA had found on several parts of the weapon.

“Those who published untruths about the incident should ask for forgiveness today from the police officers who acted bravely and fiercely and saved their lives by neutralizing the terrorist,” the statement added, likely referring to Haaretz and other left wing dailies, which published eyewitness testimonies from Palestinians who said refuted the claim that Elasibi had fired several rounds.

An officer identified as Y said after the shooting: “I felt our lives were in real danger. If I hadn’t tackled him, shot him and neutralized him, he would have shot me, my partner and the Border Police officers.”

A female officer, identified as L., said that Elasibi “aimed the gun at my head” and that she ducked in order to avoid being shot as he fired the weapon.

“If the policeman hadn’t shot and neutralized him, we wouldn’t be here,” M., a witness, said in a statement.

The Bedouin municipalities of Hura, Rahat, and Tel Sheva and other Arab municipalities launched a general strike in protest over his death on Sunday, including public services, businesses, and schools. Tens of thousands were expected to participate in a protest march following Elasibi’s funeral, which was attended by thousands, including Hadash-Ta’al MK Ahmad Tibi.

The shooting came during the Ramadan holiday period, which often sees an uptick in terror attacks and security tensions.

A law barring the Democratic Republic of Congo’s only politician with Jewish roots – and the frontrunner in the African nation’s presidential race – from taking office has sparked outrage.

The law, reintroduced to the African nation’s parliament in Kinshasa this week, would block Moise Katumbi from running because he doesn’t have two Congolese parents. The bill was introduced by Noel Tshiani, an ally of current president Felix Tshisekedi. Tshiani introduced a similar bill in the past, when Katumbi was also running.

Moise Katumbi is the only candidate who does not meet the new criteria. Katumbi is the son of a Congolese woman from royal descent and a Greek Sephardic Jew, Nisim Soriano, who fled to what was then a Belgian colony during the Holocaust. Katumbi’s grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz.

In his later years, Soriano emigrated to Israel, where he lived until his death. Katumbi visits Israel often and has met with Prime Minister Netanyahu as part of a delegation of Congolese governors.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, Chairman of the European Jewish Association, attacked the proposed legislation: “I am appalled by the proposed legislation that would disqualify a leading candidate from running for office based solely on their Jewish heritage. This is an egregious violation of human rights and a dangerous step backward for the Democratic Republic of Congo. I am sure, Congolese citizens will fight against this unjust bill and ensure that all people are able to participate in the electoral process regardless of their background. I call on all who believe in justice and equality to unite in this crucial fight for the future of the DRC and the African continent as a whole.”

The bill has been blasted by the Institute for Research in Human Rights for being “contrary to several constitutional provisions.” The Congolese organization has called on the National Assembly to vote on a “motion of preliminary rejection” due to what it sees as the “temerity” of the bill’s authors.
