‘Ludicrous’: White House denies claim that US tried killing Putin in drone attack

Zelensky’s top adviser claimed Thursday that Russia had “staged” the alleged drone attack, citing the delay in Russian state media reporting it and “simultaneous video from different angles.”

By Associated Press

Ukraine and Russia pressed their wartime rhetoric Thursday, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing confidence that Vladimir Putin would be convicted of war crimes, and the Kremlin alleging that the U.S. was behind what it called an assassination attempt against the Russian president.

The countries’ leaders have personally attacked each other multiple times during the war that Russia started by invading Ukraine in February 2022. The latest flare-up came Wednesday, with Russia’s claim that Ukraine had attacked the Kremlin in Moscow with drones meant to assassinate Putin.

Zelensky denied that Ukrainian forces were responsible for the purported drone attack. The Kremlin promised unspecified retaliation for what it termed a “terrorist” act, and pro-Kremlin figures called for the assassinations of senior Ukraine leaders.

Uncertainty still surrounds exactly what happened in the purported attack.

Putin’s spokesman on Thursday accused the United States of involvement. To generate domestic support for the war, Moscow has often tried to blame Washington for trying to destroy Russia through its help for Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a daily conference call that the Kremlin was “well aware that the decision on such actions and terrorist attacks is not made in Kyiv, but in Washington.”

“And then Kyiv does what it’s told to do,” Peskov said, without offering evidence for his claim.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council at the White House, described the claim as “ludicrous.” Zelensky, in the Netherlands, said he was “not interested” in the Kremlin’s opinion.

U.S intelligence officials are still trying to determine who was behind the drone incident and are exploring various possibilities, including a false flag operation by Russia or that a fringe group with sympathies for Ukraine could have been involved, according to a U.S. official.

But the official, who spoke Thursday on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, said intelligence officials don’t yet have any definitive answers. The official added that the Biden administration “certainly would not support the strike against Mr. Putin.”

Zelensky’s top adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, claimed Thursday that Russia had “staged” the alleged drone attack. He cited the delay in Russian state media reporting it and “simultaneous video from different angles” that appeared to show the aftermath of the alleged 2:30 a.m. attack.

The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War also saw evidence of staging.

“Russia likely staged this attack in an attempt to bring the war home to a Russian domestic audience and set conditions for a wider societal mobilization,” the think tank said.

Given recent Russian moves to bolster security, it’s “extremely unlikely that two drones could have penetrated multiple layers of air defense and detonated or been shot down just over the heart of the Kremlin in a way that provided spectacular imagery caught nicely on camera,” the ISW stated.

In The Hague, where the International Criminal Court is based, Zelensky urged the global community to hold Putin accountable and told the war crimes court’s judges that Russia’s leader “deserves to be sentenced for (his) criminal actions right here in the capital of the international law.”

In March, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes, accusing him of personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine. It was the first time the global court circulated a warrant for a leader of one of the five permanent U.N. Security Council members.

Zelensky’s visit to the Netherlands came a day after he went to Finland, which doubled the size of NATO’s border with Russia when it joined the military alliance last month, largely out of its concerns about Moscow’s long-term ambitions.

The Ukrainian president also used his trip to press the prime ministers of Belgium and the Netherlands to send advanced warplanes so his country can achieve “justice on the battlefield.” Zelensky has successfully assembled significant Western military and political support for Ukraine’s defense since the war began.

Zelensky traveled in a Dutch-supplied plane and an armored car, with security kept tight at his appearances. Next week, he is expected to go to Berlin, the capital of European Union economic powerhouse Germany, in the latest display of the Western might marshaled against Putin.

Zelensky’s trips have paid dividends. After traveling to Washington last December and then London, Paris and Brussels in February, Ukraine received heavy artillery and tanks.

But the chances of Putin standing trial in The Hague are remote. The court, which puts individuals on trial for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and aggression, doesn’t have a police force to execute its warrants. The Russian leader is unlikely to travel to any of the ICC’s 123 member nations, which are under obligation to arrest him, if they can.

On the battlefield, Ukraine’s military said that three Russian drones that hit the southern city of Odesa early Thursday had “for Moscow” and “for the Kremlin” written on them, seemingly implying they were sent in retaliation for the reported strike on the Kremlin.

US to set up military bases in Finland

If Helsinki and Washington DC were to go ahead with such plans, it would be the first case that a country has hosted even American nuclear weapons after the end of the (First) Cold War. The same goes for Poland, whose insistence on having nuclear weapons deployed on its territory has already pushed Russia to deploy its own tactical warheads in Belarus.

Miracle? Car flips over in terror attack near Huwara, pregnant woman survives

“I beg you, go now to demonstrate and to protect our lives,” the victim’s husband wrote in an appeal to fellow Jews, saying “stories like this repeat themselves daily.”

By World Israel News Staff

A pregnant woman whose car flipped over during a terror attack in Samaria Thursday night survived with mere bruises and scratches, Israel National News reported.

The attack occurred close to midnight in Samaria, not far from the notorious Palestinian town of Huwara, the scene of other recent attacks causing death and/or severe injuries.

While driving, the woman, a resident of Yitzhar, a Jewish community in Samaria, noticed suspicious movement at the side of the road before being hit by rocks, INN reported. She lost control of the vehicle, which then overturned.

The victim, in an advanced stage of pregnancy, was evacuated to the hospital.

“This story could have ended completely differently! We have been in the emergency room the entire night, and in the meantime, there is no expectation that they will release us. My pregnant wife is undergoing a series of examinations, both for her and the fetus.

“As of now it seems that my wife received a few bruises and other than that she is physically fine, thank G-d. But emotionally it will take her a long time to recover,” her husband wrote Friday morning in the community WhatsApp group.

“Understand, this is the reality of our daily lives here in Samaria,” he added.

“Thousands of rocks are hurled every single hour, every day, and stories like this repeat themselves daily. Please, share this story, so that every Jew knows what is happening here in the Land of Israel, right under their noses. Friends, this really could have ended differently. I ask you, I beg you, go now to demonstrate and to protect our lives.”

IDF forces are searching for the terrorists, the report said.

WATCH: King Charles’ coronation – a chief rabbi, in a church, on a Shabbat morning?

The Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, discusses his plan for this Saturday morning, when he will represent the Jewish communities of the Commonwealth at the coronation of King Charles III.

King Charles invited the chief Rabbi to sleep at his home on Friday night, a 15-minute walk from Westminster Abbey, the site of the coronation, so that he could get to the event without traveling by car, which is prohibited on Shabbat by Jewish law, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported. Rabbi Mirvis will attend Shabbat services in the early morning, ahead of the event.

‘Get this [Palestinian] terrorist to face justice’ – Cruz grills US nominee for diplomatic post in Jordan

“We need to use every tool we have… to get this terrorist who murdered Americans to face justice,” the senator said.

By World Israel News Staff

At a hearing Thursday for Yael Lempert, nominee for the next US Ambassador to Jordan, Senator Ted Crus (R-TX) grilled the career diplomat on the extradition of Ahlam Tamimi, who is wanted for her participation in an August 9, 2001, suicide bombing at the Sbarro pizza restaurant in Jerusalem that wounded more than 120 people and killed 15, including two U.S. nationals; about 130 were injured.

The 5 kg.-10 kg. bomb, which was packed with nails, screws, and bolts to ensure maximum damage, completely gutted the restaurant, which was full of lunchtime diners.

Tamimi, a Jordanian-Palestinian, is Number 4 on the FBI’s list of most wanted terrorists.

“We need to use every tool we have. And I have no desire to cut off aid to Jordan. What I desire is to get this terrorist who murdered Americans to face justice,” Cruz stated.

“What I can confirm to you is that I will do everything in my power to ensure that Ahlan Tamimi faces justice in the United States,” Lampert responded.

Cruz pressed the issue, asking if the US would consider withholding military and economic assistance to force the extradition.

“That would need to be weighed very carefully against the range of issues and priorities we have with the Jordanians before considering such a step, which I think would be profound,” the diplomat responded, saying she hopes to make progress “in other ways.”

Ahlam Al-Tamimi is a terrorist who masterminded an attack that killed 15 people including 2 Americans and injured over 100.

She’s proud to have committed these evil attacks.

Jordan is harboring her to this day.

Tamimi faces charges of conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. nationals outside the U.S., resulting in death. A warrant for her arrest was issued on July 15, 2013, and made public on March 14, 2017. If convicted, she could be sentenced to a maximum of life in prison or death.

In 2011, Israel released 1,027 terrorists, including Tamimi, in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier who had been held by Hamas since 2006.

Since her release, Tamimi has been living in Jordan. She has expressed pride in her involvement in the murder of Israelis and even became the host of a television program.

Jordan has rejected U.S. requests for Tamimi’s extradition.

Majority of French Parliament votes down resolution denouncing ‘apartheid’ Israel

The motion was supported by Green and far left MPs but rejected by the center-left Socialist Party.

By Ben Cohen, The Algemeiner

France’s National Assembly on Thursday firmly rejected a resolution tabled by a Communist Party MP that denounced Israel as an “apartheid” state and called for the imposition of an arms embargo and other sanctions.

The motion — tabled by Jean-Paul Le Coq, one of the leaders of the far left NUPES alliance — was roundly defeated by 199 votes against 71 in favor.

The resolution accused Israel of having “institutionalized an apartheid regime” over the Palestinians in eastern Jerusalem, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) and the Gaza Strip. It called for recognition of the “State of Palestine,” the imposition of a “strict arms embargo” upon Israel and the boycott of goods produced in West Bank settlements.

The text also stressed the right to condemn the “illiberal and colonial drift of this state” without being accused of antisemitism. However, on the question of Israel’s right to exist — which the campaign to subject Israel to a regime of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) rejects outright — the resolution emphasized that its sponsors held a “deep attachment” to the Jewish state’s continued survival.

In a statement accompanying the resolution, Le Coq argued “whether the reasons are political, security or religious, the colonization policy is contrary to international legality.” He insisted that the current Palestinian predicament “amounts juridically to a situation of apartheid” — the Afrikaner term for the enforced legal segregation of South Africa’s Black majority by a white minority regime for most of the 20th century.

The motion was supported by Green and far left MPs but rejected by the center-left Socialist Party, which said that it would table a separate resolution on the issue in the coming days. Jérôme Guedj, a Socialist MP, said that he objected to the term “apartheid,” as this “racialized what is a territorial dispute.”

MPs from center and right-wing parties angrily criticized the resolution. Aurore Bergé, president of the centrist Renaissance Party, asserted that the text was a “gesture of detestation against the State of Israel,” while the right-wing MP Meyer Habib, a close ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opined that the resolution proved that “antisemitism today is mainly on the left.”

The resolution was first proposed in July 2022 and approvingly quoted from several international human rights organizations in support of its contention that Israel practices apartheid, among them Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Israel-based B’tselem.
