Dozens of protesters gathered outside of Maasiyahu Prison in central Israel on Wednesday morning, ahead of a parole board meeting to determine whether a terrorist who murdered an IDF soldier in the 1980s should be granted compassionate release from incarceration.

Walid Daqqa was one of several men who kidnapped and murdered active duty Israeli soldier Moshe Tamam in 1984 and has served nearly 40  years of his life sentence.

Daqqa is now terminally ill and his health has seriously deteriorated in recent years. He was granted a parole hearing for early release, which would allow him to die at home, much to the outrage of his victim’s family.

Tamam’s family told Hebrew-language media that they were not informed by the authorities that Daqqa’s request for a parole hearing was granted.

“We found out about the hearing literally by accident,” Ortal Tamam, the victim’s niece, told Channel 14 from the demonstration outside of the prison.

She noted that as a terrorist, Daqqa should have been subject to a specialized, stringent parole hearing in which the Shin Bet and the victim’s family are given an opportunity to present testimony.

Instead, Tamam said, Daqqa was simply granted a standard parole hearing – in which his chances of release are significantly higher – and the family was not informed about the decision.

Several members of the Knesset joined the Tamam family and their supporters at the protest, saying they were vehemently opposed to Daqqa’s potential release.

“It’s impossible for a terrorist to be released from prison before serving all of his time. He should rot and die in prison,” MK Moshe Solomon (Religious Zionism) told Channel 14.

“This is a person who murdered an IDF soldier 37 years ago. I don’t understand why this is up for discussion at all…he has no humanitarian or medical rights, because he denied those rights to [the victim.]”

MK Yitzhak Kreuer of the Otzma Yehudit party expressed similar sentiments.

“I am ashamed that we are in this situation,” he said. “Terrorists should only have one punishment, and that’s the death penalty. There’s no reason for us to feel sorry for him.

“As the [rabbinic] sages have taught us, ‘those who are merciful to the cruel end up being cruel to the merciful,’” he added.

Neither the U.S. nor Omani governments announced the Biden official’s visit to Oman, underscoring the clandestine nature of the ongoing discussions.

Senior officials from the Biden administration are working closely with the Omani government to broker a deal to stymie Iran’s rapidly developing nuclear program, as talks to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement appear to have failed.

According to a report from Axios, Biden’s senior Middle East adviser Brett McGurk flew to Oman earlier in May to hold a face-to-face meeting with Omani officials. McGurk reportedly discussed using Omani officials as a proxy for outreach aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program.

Notably, neither the U.S. nor Omani governments announced McGurk’s visit, underscoring the clandestine nature of the ongoing discussions.

“The Omanis are holding proximity talks between the U.S. and Iran,” a senior Israeli official told Axios. The term “proximity talks” refers to negotiations conducted via a third-party mediator, without the two countries speaking directly with each other.

A senior European diplomat confirmed to Axios that the “U.S. is working with the Omanis on the Iranian issue.”

Axios also reported that the U.S. has floated the possibility of an interim agreement, which would see the Biden administration suspend aspects of the sanctions currently crippling the Iranian economy in exchange for a pledge to freeze elements of their nuclear program.

“The Americans want a time out,” another Israeli official told Axios.

Israel’s security apparatus is highly concerned about that scenario, as they believe that lifting the sanctions on Iran could facilitate the streamlining of the program, and they doubt that Tehran would hold up its end of the bargain.

Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi are expected to mention their opposition to an interim deal during an upcoming visit to Washington.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson flatly denied the report, saying that “there is no U.S. discussion of an interim deal and no discussion of sanctions relief, or closing safeguards cases.”

Relatives of the 11 Jewish worshipers murdered in a gun attack upon Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in Oct. 2018 wept in court on Tuesday as they listened to the prosecutor’s arguments on the first day of the trial of the assailant, Robert Bowers.

A 50-year-old truck driver from the Pittsburgh suburb of Baldwin, Bowers sat in court impassively as the prosecution asserted that he should face the death penalty for the massacre — the worst antisemitic atrocity in the history of the United States. Twelve jurors and six alternates — chosen on Thursday after more than 200 candidates were questioned over a month — are hearing the case. They include 11 women and seven men.

Bowers stormed into the synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018. The synagogue was hosting three congregations, Tree of Life, Dor Hadash and New Light, for weekly Shabbat services. Members of the three congregations arrived at the courthouse on Tuesday in a school bus and entered together. The atmosphere in the large, wood-paneled courtroom was grim and somber as the gallery filled with media, survivors and family members, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Armed with three handguns and an AR-15 rifle, Bowers shot out of a large window near the entrance to the synagogue and then opened fire on congregants, according to the indictment. He was shot in turn multiple times by police and ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody. Authorities have said they believe he acted alone.

The mass shooting left 11 people dead and six wounded, including four police officers who responded to the scene. Among the dead were a 97-year-old great-grandmother, an 87-year-old accountant and a couple who were married at the synagogue more than 60 years earlier.

Minutes before he launched his assault, Bowers uploaded a video to Gab, a social media platform widely used by far right extremists, in which he ranted that Jews were responsible for an influx of immigrants into the US to the detriment of its white population, declaring: “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

Prosecutors began presenting their case Tuesday by playing an initial 911 call from Bernice Simon, who reported “we’re being attacked!” at the synagogue and that her husband, Sylvan, had been shot.

Shannon Basa-Sabol, the dispatcher who took that call, testified she advised Mrs Simon to find the wound and stanch the bleeding. Then the dispatcher heard additional gunfire and screaming as Mrs Simon, too, was shot. The couple were among the victims.

“Bernice, are you still with me?” Basa-Sabol asked in an audio recording played for the jury, There was no answer.

Addressing the jurors, Assistant US Attorney Soo C. Song remarked that the “depths of the defendant’s malice and hate can only be proven in the broken bodies and his hateful words.”

Bowers has pleaded not guilty to 63 charges, including obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and hate crimes resulting in death. If convicted, he could face the death penalty, which is shaping up to be the main debate at the trial, as the defense is not disputing that Bowers is guilty.

Defense lawyer Judy Clarke argued that Bowers could be understood to have acted on an irrational belief and not hatred. His lawyers have also claimed that he suffers from schizophrenia and other mental health challenges.

“He had what to us is this unthinkable, nonsensical, irrational thought that by killing Jews he would attain his goal,” Clarke said, adding: “There is no making sense of this senseless act. Mr. Bowers caused extraordinary harm to many, many people.”

Woman who accused Joe Biden of sexual assault says she is seeking refuge in Russia because she was faced with “walking to a cage or being killed” in the U.S.

A woman who accused President Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her in the early 1990s has fled to Russia and is seeking asylum in the country, telling local media that she feared for her life should she remain in the United States.

“I’m still kind of in a daze a bit but I feel very good,” Tara Reade told Sputnik News, a Russian media outlet, during a news conference in Moscow on Tuesday. “I feel very surrounded by protection and safety.”

After touching down in Russia, Reade said, she “felt safe and I felt heard and I felt respected.”

Sitting beside Maria Butina, a Russian parliament member who was imprisoned in the U.S. in 2018 after being convicted of acting as a foreign agent on behalf of Moscow, Reade said she was grateful to her contacts in Russia for providing her a safe haven.

“I just really so appreciate Maria and everyone who’s been giving me [protection] at a time when it’s been very difficult to know if I’m safe or not.”

Reade said the decision to move to Russia had been “very difficult” but she felt that she had no choice, as her life and liberty were in freedom in her home country.

“I just didn’t want to walk home and walk into a cage or be killed, which is basically my two choices,” Reade added.

Shortly after Biden received the Democratic nomination for president in March 2020, Reade, who worked as a Senate aide on his staff in 1993, said that he had sexually assaulted her. A friend of Reade’s confirmed that she had told her about the incident at the time, although most mainstream media outlets dismissed the allegations.

Reade also described several incidents in which Biden allegedly made sexualizing remarks to her at the office, as well as stroking her shoulder and neck without permission.

Other women described similar encounters with Biden, including former Nevada State Representative Lucy Flores.

Flores, a Democrat, said that in 2014, Biden sniffed her hair, grabbed her shoulders, and kissed the back of her head without her consent.

Tragedy and loss struck hard in Houston, Texas, over Memorial Day weekend as 35-year-old Adam Tobias was shot and killed at his daughter’s high school graduation party.

Police were called to 5811 Santa Cecilia Lane at about 4:15 a.m. on Friday, May 26, after the shooting took place. It appears to be an unprovoked attack by Philip Arning, 24, after an argument that erupted in the early morning hours. According to KTRK, Arning was the boyfriend of Tobias’ ex-partner.

Tobias’ daughter, Destiny, was devastated by the news, having described her father as her “favorite person” and was at his side throughout the evening.

Arning was consequently taken into custody and charged with one count of murder before he was released on a $50,000 bond from the Harris County Jail.

The aftermath of the tragic night has not only left deep emotional wounds but has created distress upon Tobias’ family in the form of mounting financial payments. A GoFundMe page has been started to support their funeral expenses in light of the late father’s passing.

Witness accounts have reported that Tobias wanted to savor every moment spent with his daughter, stating, ‘I want to enjoy every moment with you. You deserve this party, and I’m so proud of you” before the tragic events unfolded. Photos show the pair smiling together in the blissful moments before his death.

A benefit to help support Tobias’ family is set to take place June 3, 2023 at 10 a.m. at 503 McCarty Street in Houston. To honor Adam’s memory, generous donations are encouraged in light of such a heartbreaking event.
